March 2004

WELCOME to GORDON DONALD'S POSTIE DAY.  In 1974 Gordon was the subject of the first illustration to appear in FOL.  The Manly Daily published a photo-article about Gordon which included the words "a welcome sight in Pittwater Road was postie, Gordon Donald."  The reproduction in FOL filled the best part of a foolscap page and confirmed Gordon's name as POSTIE.  He has been Captain/Hcp, President, Club Champion and, for most of his Lizard's life, Secretary-Treasurer and Treasurer.

Good on you Gordie.

The LINDENBERG KO COMP kicks off today.  The draw should appear, with the late news, on the back page, as well as the Calderwood-Jamberoo results, handicap adjustments and the day's nearest the pins and long drives.

FOUNDATION/LIFE MEMBERS DAY and GREENGATE HOTEL GC INVITATION DAY, with 23 members and 12 visitors, produced the following results:

GARY CASTLE was first past the post for the second time since joining.  With scores of 23 out and 22 back he didn't expect company while crossing the line - or be running second after the first nine.  The 45 pointers were the highest recorded since his presidential brother turned heads - in fact cracked necks, when he awarded himself first prize with a 46 pointer in Jan '03.

ROY DONALD, itinerate visitor, celebrated his first win, of any description, since January 2000.

MANFRED enjoyed himself on the day by collecting the Best Front Nine, Longest Drive and being one of the winning pair in the Greengate match, as well as scoring an eagle on the 17th be sending down a long drive - then slamming a 3 iron shot into the bank, at the back of the green, which rolled down the hill to within 4 ft of the pin and sinking the putt.

CHRIS MOONEY and MICHAEL MORGAN had time to score 36 points and 27 points respectively while doing the catering - with assistance by Wal Hill, and were the only Lizards 'available' to rip down the road for the essential supplement for the waning beer supply and be back in time for Chris to fulfill his duties as Victualer.  Their actions to keep the day on track should be an inspiration for fellow Lizards to become involved on Lizards days.

THE GREENGATE HOTEL G.C. INVITATION DAY MkI, was a great success.  The Greengators contingent, pulled out of a hat or similar dark hole, by our Vice President Colin Lacey, played the Lizards for an engraved pewter mug, donated by the Gators, in a 4BBB competition.

The Lizards and Gators enjoyed themselves on and off the field and it seems certain there will be a rematch/s.

In my quest to transpose that game onto this piece of paper, I expected to see a list of about 1/2 dozen teams thrashing their better ball till it found some solace in the cup - and being able to poke some garbage at some garbagable 4 ballers.  But when I opened the sealed envelope, a couple of weeks later, I was confronted with the information:

WINNING TEAM: Lizards 1 up  45.5 to 44.5
WINNING PAIR - BY HIGHEST MARGIN: Dawson Carroll +3  Manfred +2

WOW! what excitement - I dribbled into my left sock, and was unfortunately seated at the time.

See you next time - go to the range and practice more .5's and you should eat the Lizards at the re-match.
