February 2004

WELCOME to FOUNDATION / LIFE MEMBERS DAY.

LEON LIST, FOUNDER of THE LIZARDS GOLF CLUB in 1946, was licensee of the Steyne Hotel in the early post war years, when bottled beer was as prevalent as a win in the state lottery.  He would bring a few quart bottles filled with the finest draught beer, to the course at Palm Beach, to wash down the steak lunch.  He also provided a few snippets from the pub larder.  on one occasion, when the pub fare was bare, he made a sortie to Manly Beach, armed with a flask of rum and a cup of Rice - returning to the kitchen with 2 dozen drunken pidgeons which he handed over to the chef.  When he arrived at the course he had 24 freshly cooked squab, as well as the liquid gold.  Hats off to the founder.

THE LIFE MEMBERS are out in force - extra prizes today include Lizards 3rd and all par 3s - making 20 chances to score a win.  L.M. Donors are Bill Sheehan, Gordon Donald, Bill Epps, Garry Bird Andy Warner and Nev Meredith.  Nifty was unexcusably omitted from the list of today's donors, published last month.  He was, however, first in with his share of the fund to provide the prizes and wished to be remembered to Vickiand all the members.

DAWSON CARROLL strikes again!  In Dec '93, after six unseccessful attempts, he won the Dawson Carroll trophy - and now on his 17th trip, and about 35 monthly attendances later, he wins the Captain/Handicapper's Day!  This is not the sporting statistic you would find in Wisdon's - more likely to appear in the Nostradamus Australasian Digest.

WAL HILL, prior to hit off, requested his handicap be reduced by 8 (from 44 to 36) for the day's play.  He then proceeded to the first tee and played his best round ever - beating Jim Small on a countback for second place and finishing one shot short of Dawson's winning score.  Congratulations on your effort - and while we have your attention, the Pres, and members thank you for arranging today's catering with the able assistance of Michael Morgan and Chris Mooney.

JASON KNIGHT scooped the visitor's prize for Nov. and Jan., with an average score of 44 points.

MATTHEW CASTLE'S 7 points for the first nine opened the door to his second Bradman downer in as many months.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS by BRIAN ELLIS and IAN MASSEY passed through President Glenn's mangle and eventually given u-numer-nus approval by the members.  Congratualtions and welcome to Brian and Ian - we wish you a long, happy and fruitful association with the Lizards.

DAWSON CARROLL is enjoying his last day at Lizards for the next nine or ten months - by the time we have been to Jamberoo Dawson will be cooling his heels in Ireland.  We thank him for his company over the past few months and wish him a pleasant joutney and a safe return to our shores next summer.
