HAPPY NEW YEAR

President Glenn Castle wishes the members, visitors and readers a healthy and prosperous 2004.

WELCOME to MANFRED'S CAPTAIN-HANDICAPPER'S DAY.  As Captain he sees that each competition, regardless of format, is conducted in accordance with Hoyle; any necessary markers are available and in place on the course; and provision has been made for sufficient suitable trophies to be on hand.  As Handicapper he records the six and a half thousand stableford points we score each year, and comes up with the mind boggling amount of precise details published in the club's annual booklets.  Our monthly handicap adjustments are a byproduct of the overall process.  Hats off the Manfred who is midway through his 4th year of mastery of the formidable task.

NEIL WINTERTON, President 2002/3, is Manfred's able assistant this year.

CHRISTMAS CARROLL DAY, with 22 members and 7 visitors, produced the following results:

SPECIAL EVENT - BEST SCORE on the 7th: Hart Schwarz  4 points off 28 handicap

RAFFLE: Garry Bird

JIM SMALL, current holder of the trophy, being aware of the bottle of Chivas Regal donor Dawson Carroll intended to present with the cup, put his ears back, pulled out all stops and broke the tape a short nose ahead of Michael Harrison, who had played a brilliant round of one under the card.  Congratulations to both players.  Jim is the first contender to achieve back to back successes in our quest to hold aloft this prestigious prize.

IAN MASSEY collected the visitors prize for the third time in 9 months.

ALAN PODER took the visitor's runner-up for the second time in 2 months.  He zoomed across the line with a 39 pointer, his personal best since he appeared in print in March '01 - apart from last January when he was given a dud handicap and short circuited the system with 52 points.

LAST MONTH the Editor was fined for mentioning in the FOL "that Col Lacey won the Christmas Carroll Day in 1999, when it is common knowledge that the Chief Dobber won on that day".  A seemingly watertight assertion in view of the trophy being engraved "1999 - A. Warner"

THE ACCOUNT of Andy's win was published in the January 1999 issue of FOL, and related to his success in December 1998.

IN VIEW of the healthy interest being taken in the history engraved on the trophy, an examination of the 15 entries was made - and only 5 were found to be correct.

THE TIME is opportune to refurbish the maturing cup; amend the existing entries; and keep an eye on subsequent engraving.

THIS SPECIAL TROPHY is not grouped with others won during the Lizards fiscal year, and presented at the July AGM.  It is won at Christmas and presented on the day by overseas member and donor, Dawson Carroll.  The winner retains the cup for 12 months.  The date to be inscribed on the treasured possession is obvious.
