March 2002

WELCOME to RAYNER MEMORIAL DAY. Dave Rayner, affectionately known as the GRIZZ, enlisted as a Lizard in November '87 and after 11 happy years with the club died in January '99 - aged 41.  He was sadly missed - and still is.

DONOR today is Jim Small.  Prior to the demise of GRIZZ we had been enjoying SMALL/RAYNER Day.  Since that time, Jim removed his name from the fixture card, in deference to his one time son-in-law - hats off to both Dave Rayner and Jim Small.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY, a day celebrated more in the United States and Australia than in Ireland, is with us again.  This is only the 5th occasion it has coincided with a Lizards golf day.  Have a piece of green on your person to avoid a fine.

FOUNDATION/LIFE MEMBERS DAY, with 21 members and 5 visitors, produced the following results:

GARRY BIRD, one of the two LMs playing on Life Members Day, pulled a couple of things out of the hat, which he had not seen for 32 months - 43 points and 1st prize!  Congratulations Garry.

DAVID GILCHRIST, suffering from a 3 shot reduction following his 47 pointer the previous month, bounced back toward the pay window but was beaten on a countback for 2nd place by Neil Shackle.

ALLAN HIGHT, visitors winner, was pleasantly bemused when he was awarded a trophy of equal value to the Lizards winner.

NEIL WINTERTON harvested 3 of the 10 N.T.P. prizes on offer.

DAWSON CARROLL cracked it for a best back nine - his sole win during his longest stay in Australia - 4 months.  Dawson is heading back to Ireland next Saturday.  We hope he enjoyed his sojourn as much as we enjoyed his company.  We wish him a happy birthday on Thursday and a pleasant flight home.

The meeting after the game was delayed due to a temporary lack of light beer for the downers; a profusion of irrelevant names, such as Rex Mossop, Lennie Le Mon, Dave Collins etc., on the nearest the pin markers; and the absence of the all important bell.  The only other items missing were Gilchrist and Shackle - no doubt the NOBEL PRIZE winners!
