February 2002
WELCOME to FOUNDATION/LIFE MEMBERS DAY. Fifty five years and 8 months
ago, LEON LIST, licensee of the Steyne Hotel, Manly, and founder of the Lizards
Golf Club, led his handful of recruits to the 1st tee at Palm Beach - to
contest the first Lizards Golf Match.
This group had played before but it was Leon who instigated the club -
in the “Cellaret” of the pub, when he said “This is a pretty good - why
don’t we make it a regular thing”. The Club was formed with Leon as President,
the rest were members - The Foundation Members.
TODAY President John O’Meara and members will contest the 668th rostered
competition.
DONORS for the match are Life Members Bill Sheehan, Gordon Donald, Bill
Epps, Garry Bird and Andy Warner.
CAPTAIN HANDICAPPERS DAY, with 22 members and 7 visitors, produced the
following results:
LIZARDS 1st David Gilchrist 47 points off 19 handicap
LIZARDS 2nd Glen Castle 43 points off 31 handicap
VISITORS 1st Phil Peddar (countback) 40 points off 21 handicap
VISITORS 2nd Werner Schlee 40 points off 21 handicap
BEST SCRATCH SCORE Michael Harrison 34 Points
BEST FRONT NINE Grant Schwarz 23 points off 31 handicap

DAVID GILCHRIST opposition demolishing round included four 4 pointers,
six 3’s, five 2’s and no slots.
GARRY BIRD LM and DAVID CALLEIJA were the only other players to return
slot free cards.
JOHN O’MEARA and HART SCHWARZ, co jointly, had more slots than a post office.
RUNNER UP Glen Castle had his best round since January 2000, but his seven
under his handicap did not make a dent in David’s 11 under.
DAVID, in company with Noel Quinlan, took out the Captain’s Special Event
- a repeat of last years effort, when he won with Phil Peddar.
WERNER SCHLEE, who burst upon the scene last October with a panoramic 55
pointer off 36, played a good consistent round of 21 - just enough to become
involved in the wrong end of a countback.
FINES, some were
Manfred Wagner for his expertise in preparing the 4
ball cards
Michael Morgan observing trying on a ladies handglove
in Vicki’s shop
Fred Rees
complaining his handicap of 32 was too high, then scoring only 15
points
Garry Bird stating
on the 17th “I will play a flop sand wedge here to within 6 foot” and executing
the shot as planned. Pity it was the Chief Dobber's ball.
