Building and Planning the Town
The city of Glückstadt was built with a center (the market
place) and it's streets were built like spokes coming out of the
center. The following is a list of the important dates concerning
the city:
- On March 3, 1617 - the founding
1617-1627 - construction of the East section of the city.
1619 - construction of the harbor and protecting wall
from the Elbe.
1620 - the expansion of the city and the building of the
fortress.
1623 - the building of the three city towers.
1630-1648 - the construction of the West part of the
city.
Until 1648 - the construction of the Rethövel (a part of
the city by the harbor)
1689 - reinforcement of the wall protecting the city.
- From 1969 - the construction of the Bole and the
Butendiek (two other quarters in the city) until 1973.Of
course they were always prepared for a siege. They had an
extra safeguard of the harbor to bring food from Denmark,
and the market place was the economic and military center
point for everyone. During the early building period they
called for a military reserve to assemble here. Due to
the shape of the city, the city government which was
located in the center of town, could send troups to
anywhere very fast. These precautions were necesary in
the day and age that the city was planned.
