- March 3, 1617 - The founding of Glückstadt.
1619 - Glückstadt welcomes persecuted religious
sects and offers them special priveleges as citizens of
their new city.
- 1620 - The reinforcement of the city with 1000 soldiers.
The things building of many of today's historical
monuments.
- 1625-1629 - War between Denmark and Nieder-Saxon
(Niedersachsen) which is also known as the thirty year
war.
- 1628 - The fortress of Glückstadt withstands a siege by
Wallenstein. The kaiser rules Jutland (a region of
Denmark). Toll instituted by King Christian IV of Denmark
on ships going to Hamburg in order to encourage toll free
trade in Glückstadt.
1630 - The great naval battle on the Elbe between Denmark
and Hamburg.
1630-1648 - The golden years of Glückstadt.
1648 - A huge flood causing great devastation along the
Elbe. The founder of Glückstadt, Christian IV dies in
Copenhagen.1649 - Frederik III moves the royal government
offices to Glückstadt, making the city the capital of
Schleswig-Hostein.
1659 - The founding of the "Glückstadter
Guineischen Handelskompanie," (Glückstadt-New
Guinea Trade Company). This company thus establishing a
triangle trade with West Africa and the West Indies,
importing sugar cane to Glückstadt.
1670 -The beginning of the Greenland voyages.
1681-1710 - The third largest Danish fleet of ships has
it's base in Glückstadt.
- 1740 - The founding of the first newspaper in
Schleswig-Hostein, named the "Glückstadter
Fortuna."
1810 - The founding of the "Gelehrntenschule"
(Gelehrtenschool), which was later renamed,
"Detlefsenschule"
1813-1814 - The coalition sieges Glückstadt because of
Denmark's alliancewith Napoleon.
1814-1816 - The fortress surrounding Glückstadt is
destroyed.
1845 - Glückstadt is linked to Elmshorn and consequently
Kiel and Altona (Hamburg), by train.
1848 - Revolution!! Schleswig-Hostein's revolution
against Denmark.
1863 - The withdrawl of Danish soldiers from Germany
(Schleswig-Holstein) after the war.
1867 - Schleswig-Holstein becomes a province of Prussia,
so the government offices are moved to Kiel.
1911 - Founding of the Temming paper factory.
During 1945 - Refugees from the east cause the doubling
of Glückstadt's population. Troups from England occupy
the city.
During 1948 - The reconstruction and expansion of
Glückstadt to the Nord and Butendiek districts.
1997 - Glückstadt on the internet.
