I just didn't know! - Kim..., Aug/10/1999 01:02:23
I decided to watch the movie on CBS last night on the spur of the moment,
because I like to see
how Indians are portrayed. When the credits came across, I recognized the
name Michael
Greyeyes. A friend I used to work with knew him or met him or something
(she worked at a
reservation casino). I like the men with long hair look anyway, but WHOA!!!!
Beeeyootiful
facial structure! I was really glad to see the Native American "get the
girl". I was also glad to
see that pompous dork Custer portrayed for what he really was: a fool!
Anyway, after I saw
the movie I thought I'd find out more about Mr Greyeyes and boy, have I!
This has been fun!
Thanks folks!!

I too just happened to tune into CBS Sunday night. Forget Sully on DQMW
-- this guy is
h-o-t!!! I'm going to Santa Fe on Friday -- maybe I won't come back. I
too e-mailed CBS
and "thanked" them for showing the movie. Don't know how I missed it the
first time. I've
enjoyed all the postings -- I feel better now that I know everyone else

..... watching SWCH this weekend?
The South African contingent set alarm clocks for 03:30 in
order to gather for the special
viewing of Sonja's video. Much coffee was consumed, gallons of ice
cream and popcorn was eaten,
and two hours later a bunch of women on a caffiene 'high' drove
around the neighbourhood hooting
at stray dogs. They were all arrested, and at the trial Sonja
insisted on showing her SWCH
video as evidence. Fortunately the judge was a woman, and
immediately gave a verdict of
'not guilty' due to temporary insanity, and decreed that the next day
(Monday) would be made a public
holiday for the whole country, so that the MG fans could
'recover'. It shall hencesforth
be known as 'Michael Greyeyes Day', charactarised by the
consumption of vast amounts of
Coffee, ice cream, and popcorn, to commemorate the night MG fans
burned the midnight oil to watch
SWCH.
('Tis a crazy world we live in,
Marnie!!)
A CAFFEINE high did you say???!!! - Marnie, Aug/10/1999 08:06:18
Sonja, Sonja and assorted zany South Africans, little did I know when I
coerced you all to
watch Michael Greyeyes (like that took a lot of coercion) that it would
cause a near
international incident. I'm so glad that the Right Honorable Lady Justice
didn't throw you in
the deepest, darkest, dungeon (even though that would've been a taste of
your own medicine for
chaining me up in your basement and making me upload pic after pic of MG)
The thing that has
me most worried is the hooting at dogs ...everything else is explicable.
Is it some strange side
effect of SWCH ....I just slapped it in the vcr and watched it again to
make sure (for purely
scientific purposes) and tried hooting at my own dog to see if there was
any reaction ....he just
tilted his head to one side and gave me a puzzled look! I even called my
sis in Scotland and
asked her if she'd had uncontrollable urges to hoot at dogs after her own
mini MG marathon,
"Wuuh?" she said (it was 3a.m.) then, "No, just incontrollable urges to
hoot at 6ft men with
long, dark hair!" Sonja, I'm worried about you, you haven't noticed any
sudden hair growth and
strange longings when the moon is full, have you?....eagerly awaiting your
explanation,
Marnie
My Dear Marnie..... - Sonja, Aug/11/1999 06:19:52
In our thriving metropolis of Bloemfontein, where all decent citizens are
safely tucked up
in bed by 9pm and it is illegal to 'dance' on Sundays, there is little
else one can do for
'kicks'. As there are no 6'2"m tall men with long dark hair about our streets
at 5:00am,
(actually, there are no 6'2" tall men with long dark hair about our streets,
PERIOD!) the
neighbourhood dogs are the next best bet OK!! (Never fear, I shall be discussing
the
fetish with my therapist in our next session. No doubt several 'issues'
will have to be
dealt with!!)
Hope this answers your question.
Did everyone enjoy... - inti, Aug/10/1999 13:34:40
Marnie, make that 6 foot 2 inch tall men with long dark
hair, according to an article I read a while back.

More - Marnie, Aug/10/1999 23:13:46
I've also read two other versions of this story. Both are from very old
books ...so you can
imagine the style of writing ...and one of the books is written by Custer
himself, did
anyone say "purple prose"? Phew, it's a tough one to get through. Needless
to say
although the bones of the story are similar the end is very different according
to these
versions. (Though Custer does give a description of someone who matches
"Tokalah"
almost exactly!)
Marnie
Custer question - inti, Aug/11/1999 20:17:40
Marnie, you have me really intrigued. Any way you could share
with us what ol' Long Hair said about the person who
you say resembles Tokalah?
I shudder to think what REALLY happened to Anna and Sara. I
can just imagine, and it ain't pretty. Another fascinating
story of a captured white woman who came to love her adopted
people is that of Cynthia Ann Parker who, as a little girl in
frontier Texas, was captured by the Comanche. When
she grew up, she married one of their best-known chiefs (I
think his name was Nocona?) and gave birth to perhaps the
most famous of Comanche chiefs, Quanah Parker. Quanah went on
to guide his people's inevitable transition from the old ways to
the new. He was also instrumental in founding the Native
American (peyote) church. Poor Cynthia Ann was forcibly taken from her
Comanche family by white soldiers and returned to her own white
family, where, within a short period of time, she died, probably
of sadness and a broken heart. She never wanted to return to the
white world. She barely remembered English. She had a good husband
and children. Quanah loved his mother very much. There are a
number of very good books on their lives. It is a story that

Re Pioneer Women - Angela Konen..., Aug/26/1999 14:52:42
Hi Cheryl,
The book I read is Pioneer Women:Voices from the Kansas Frontier, by Joanna
Stratton ,published by Simon and Schuster,1981.
Did you get a chance to read "Anna and the King of Hearts" on this message
board? I have written a summary of the information I found, including the
different ending.
Angela
Thank you - Cheryl, Aug/27/1999 04:05:39
I did see the info on the Pioneer Women book and I will buy it this
weekend. I was hoping for info on the book by Custer and others. I
really appreciate you taking the time to respond, especially since I did
not have time to read the whole message board and I did not know Anna
and the King of Hearts was the name of the story I was asking about.
Thanks again.

High ratings for Stolen Women
Author: inti, Aug/10/1999 16:38:38
For those of you who are not on
the mgfans onelist, here
is some great news I just posted,
thanks to my friend who
saw it on another EMail list.
This is really good news:
"CBS Scores Sunday Win with "Stolen
Women"
Mon, Aug 9, 1999 09:19 AM PDT
Overnight Ratings for Sunday, August 8, 1999
CBS ruled Sunday ratings (August
8) in the overnight metered markets with an 8.7
rating/15 share (8.8/15 last
week). CBS Sunday Movie "Stolen Women, Captured
Hearts" averaged an 8.3/13 from
9-11, peaking in the final half-hour with a
9.0/15."
Think CBS will finally get the
hint(s) to: a) finally release this film on
video, and b) consider doing
other native-themed films since this one was
such a success both times they
aired it?
I just sent an EM to Vickie to let her know this good news, too.

My Favorite Moment
Author: Angela Konen, Aug/11/1999 03:27:38
One of my favorite moments in
SWCH is when Anna places the shirt against Our Hero's back to see
if it fits. His body language,
the movement of his hair and the longing on his face melted my heart.

I watched SWCH on Sunday. It was
great, so was MG. I wonder if any of you have read Tony
Hillerman mystery novels? There
is a Navajo police officer in there named Jim Chee that I keep
picturing MG as playing.
Jim Chee all Day - Angela Konen..., Aug/13/1999 01:13:01
I have read nearly ALL of Tony Hillerman- ( I skipped the one about Vietnam).Just
like you I
have been picturing Our Hero as Jim Chee but I always picture Jim Chee
with short hair (that
bothers me because I love to see MG's flowing hair. MG stated on a FAQ
that he would like to
play" a cop". Incidentally Lou Diamond was Jim Chee in a "Jim Chee" movie--Dark
Cloud was
the title. Some of my favorite Hillerman books are Fallen Man, Sacred Clowns,
Coyote Waits
and an older one People of the Darkness.Send me an email if you have TH
questions. I also have
a reference book on his work.
Jim Chee... - Gigi, Aug/13/1999 06:03:13
I always pictured Jim Chee with long hair and now that I have seen MG I
have a face to
attach to it. I just finished watching the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie
"True Women".
MG has a small roll in it. But he does a really good job. His name is Tarantula.
He is a
Comanche warrior in this one.

Okay, my sisters and I came up with this idea...
We first have to come up with someone who taped
Stolen Women twice, or who is willing to let us
BORROW their tape. (Okay, so obviously it can be
a copy if it their one and only tape, but who has
to know?)
We come up with a mailing list of everyone who
wants to SEE the movie again and we allow a week
for them to VEIW the tape!
How's that????

Please, we can't live without having access to this

grateful to
any one who would loan me a copy for 1 day. I have been reading
historical romance novels

Can you please help me? Iwould gladly swap my Cassie Edwards books.
Please respond soon. Thanks, Kim

to help, i hope you all know that. i will write CBS & tell them of
the
rash of persons that seriously
WANT this video, perhaps that will be of some help. im sure many of
us who have the tape, would still
purchase the video, more money to be made for CBS.
once i thought of trying to do
some type of "online petition", a way to collect lots of names & submit
to CBS (in Sweden, Stolen Women
was aired recently, they may also want the video, more names
there). if anyone has an idea
of how to attempt something like this, lets discuss it here. someone with
enough time to do research &
set this up would be needed as well.
lets use the message board to
discuss options or plans or other ideas!!
we will be pleased to help promote
this or any similar effort through our fan pages...
MG has the fans, we want the
video,
so what are we going do about
it??
thank you,
~gin~

Glad you came by Candy. Don't be in a hurry to rush off though!!
And do please vote for michael at the Native celebs site - URL above this

Hello Sonja - Candy..., Aug/17/1999 06:48:19
Not in a hurry at all. I like this page and bookmarked it.
Have a great day.
Pooped! - Marnie, Aug/17/1999 07:06:31
Hi Sonja, I'm not rushing anywhere ...in fact I'm kicking the shoes off
lying back and
waiting for you to ply me with Earl Grey(eyes) tea and cucumber sandwiches.
It's been so
busy on the board, list and files that I don't know how Gin keeps it up
....I'm flagging, I
tell you, darn CBS for airing SWCH again (just teasing!)....but my life
was a lot easier
before this sudden rush of popularity *s*!

Describing Words
Author: Angela Konen, Aug/18/1999 14:46:23
The best word that describes Michael
(for me) is EXQUISITE.
Enchanting? - Janie, Aug/19/1999 22:51:04
Dreamy?
Gorgeous?
Charming?
Captivating?
Fine?
PERFECT!
All of the above;)
I've been thinking about
a sequel to Stolen
Women
Author: Amanda, Aug/17/1999 22:11:53
After seeing "Stolen Women" for
the second time, it left me wanting more. Also, there are so many
questions that could still be
answered: did they stay together?, have children?, etc...I have e-mailed
CBS productions and suggested
they consider doing a sequel. Does anyone else out there agree with
me? If so, let's talk about it.
I'd like to hear your opinions, thoughts, etc...
I agree on the sequel - Candy..., Aug/18/1999 09:44:49
The ending has left a opening for a sequel. What did CBS say?
There are enough possibilities, Daniel can try and get her back.
Her and Tokalah plan a move to another city. Anna can do that to try
and protect him from being killed. This causes two factions in the town.
The possibilities are endless. I'm actually writing a novel at the moment
which I hope to finish and have published.
I also write poetry.
Perhaps we should all put together ideas for a script on the sequel and
send it to CBS. What do you say ladies?
Yes, sequel please - Luana, Aug/20/1999 17:20:53
Yes, I am in agreement with you! I was just
thinking this after watching it for the 2nd time,
too. I would assume they'd stay together and the
sequel could show their struggles as a mixed couple
and the tribe's continuing fight against the likes
of Custer, with Tokalah being the leader of the
remainder of his tribe. I like your ideas. Your
novel sounds like it'd be really good. Yes, there
are many possibilities. Of course, another more
Hollywood route might have them separated again and
searching for each other throughout the movie. Naw.
Don't want that one. :)
Sequel? - Bonnie, Aug/18/1999 12:19:38
I wouldn't mind a sequel only if Michael and Jeannine were cast again as
the characters. But,
because the story ended with them together (Yay!) I am content. This movie
reminded me very
much of a romance novel where the 'Happily Ever After' is necessary. Right
now I want to see
more videos or live performances of Michael and his dancing. His brief
moment of dancing in
SHCW had me spellbound. I know there's a video out there but I forget the
title at the
moment. I'll go and check.
As for sequels go, I wouldn't mind finding out more about what happened
to Gooch in Dance Me
Outside, too. "Michael required" :-D

from RR are superb.

Tea-time - Marnie, Aug/20/1999 06:05:12
Glad you enjoyed them....now I'm going to lie back, drink some Earl Grey(eyes)tea
and wait to
be hand fed cucumber sandwiches (till Sonja gets tired of that and makes
me get back to
work!)

Is anyone else having
trouble loading this
page??
Author: Amanda, Aug/19/1999 21:23:10
I can't seem to access this message
board. Is anyone else having trouble? The page just will not load.
It took me almost an hour to
get this message through. Can anyone help?
I've had problems in the past - Janie, Aug/20/1999 00:33:54
Once I realize the wait is unusually long, over one or two minuites, I
wait a few hours and then
I stop back again. It seems to solve itself. Try that, works for me!
Gnashing of teeth! - Marnie, Aug/20/1999 01:47:54
It's not just you ...it happens to all of us. There are a couple of reasons
....Starblvd
updates the system occasionally and this slows everything down (or makes
it impossible to
use) and, also, a lot of people are accessing the various other boards
they run so the
system is swamped. As you said, Janie, the best thing is to come back later....or
throw the
computer out of the window with much wailing and gnashing of teeth. The
latter doesn't
help access the board, but, boy, does it ever make me feel better!

Gnashing of teeth! - Amanda, Aug/21/1999 00:27:06
Thanks Marnie - I feel better knowing that is isn't just my crazy computer!
Is
there any hope that things will improve in the future? In the meantime,
I guess I'll
try not to take it out on my computer (too late!). Thanks again.

hi amanda,
as far as things improving, its up to star blvd, the message board server.
as
marnie said its when they maintain the system that folks have probs. janies
comment "leave & try later" is what we have all learned to do. marnie,
myself &
sonja all do the same. i tried to wait it out 1 time, was never so mad
in my life,
as you stated B4, took over an hour!!!
lets just hope star blvd picks more convienient times to maintain their
msg
boards from now on =)
myself, id give it 3 minits to load, tops (33.6 modem here), if it doesnt,
try
later or tomarrow...
thanks!!

I'll try this one more time! - Amanda,
Aug/22/1999 00:12:25
Well, I learned a little trick to get this page to load faster. While it's
loading and the screen is still blank, I click on one of my links and
immediately hit ESC button. The page miraculously appears, maybe 8 out
of 10 times! (Which isn't bad odds!) Anyway, thanks for the positive
feedback Gin. Getting back to my original post about the sequel, I still
haven't heard from CBS. Maybe they figure if they ignore me, I'll just
go away. (HA!) I appreciated your response Candy - it seems we think
alike. If and when I receive a response from CBS, I'll let you know. It
certainly can't hurt to put a bug in their ear about it. By the way, is
anyone ever in the Chat room. Tried several times and it was always
empty. Is there a special time when someone stops in?
Thanks,
Amanda

Anna and the King of Hearts
Author: Angela Konen, Aug/20/1999 05:00:52
Anna and the King of Hearts:The
True Story
I am going to summarize the information
that I got from the book Pioneer Women.First , some
information about the book:
Title: Pioneer Women Voices From
the Kansas Frontier
Author: Joanna L. Stratton
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
The story appears in Part Two,
Chapter Six, pg 123-126.The author obtained the information
from”Emily Haines Harrison,’
Reminiscences of Early Days in Ottawa County,’ “Kansas Historical
Society. Vol.10(1907-8),pp.627-28.
(Whew!)
I am summarizing and paraphrasing in a linear list form for clarity.
1. Sarah and Anna were captured
separately ,a month apart, by two diiferent groups of warriors
who took them to the same village.
Sarah was 17 years old, one of 7 children. Anna is described as a
beautiful young woman, with”yellow
hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion”. She had been married
exactly one month.
2. At the village they were forced
to do menial chores. They were obedient but immediately began to
set aside dried buffalo meat
so they would be ready to escape whenever they had a chance. The
chance came during a big pow-wow.
3. They almost made it to Fort
Dodge when they were recaptured, whipped , tied to a ponies and
taken back. Now they had no privileges
whatever and settled to a life of hard work.
4.An Indian chief (who is not
named) proposed to Anna and she accepted hoping to improve her lot.
It worked. In her words she states
that ,” my Indian husband would come in from the warpath
bringing many things he thought
would please me”.
5. Now the other women had to
wait on her and bring her firewood. All her husband expected of her
was for her to tend his horse
when he came in. He would throw the lariat to her and she would
“picket out” the horse. (WASH
THE HORSE ,ANNA?”
6.In her words Anna began , “to think much of him for his kindness to me.”
7. One day she was brought the
news that there were two white men in the camp. She did not care to
see them. Then her own brother
walked into the tent.
8. Anna and Sarah were exchanged for the lives of five chiefs scheduled for hanging.
9. After their return, Sarah made
money by telling her story and selling her photograph. Anna did
not.
10. Anna is described as melancholy
and unable to forget her captivity. A few months after she
returned home, she gave birth
to a son , by her Indian husband. The child died at age two.
11. An acquaintance reported that “her mind gradually failed and she died in an asylum.”
12.Anna is quoted as having said,
: “After I came back, the road seemed rough, and I often wished
they had never found me.”
Joanna Stratton writes that Custer
wrote about this incident in “My Life on the Plains”and that he
wrote about the story in a political
way. Her opinion is that the personal truth of the capture was
very complex.
O Tokalah, wherefore art thou??
The End
PS The book has some humorous
, some frightening, and many touching and often sad anecdotes of the
relationships of the pioneer
women with the Native people.
If not available at your library
you might find it at a college library under History/Women’s
Studies which is its classification
. Enjoy!
Anna's story - inti, Aug/22/1999 00:18:31
Thank you SO much for posting that insightful summary of
the fate of Sara and Anna. So much of it reminds me of
the story of Cynthia Ann Parker in frontier Texas who
married a Comanche chief and gave birth to the great
chief Quanah, then was taken back to her white family after
many years. And died of a broken heart. It would be a
tragic but fascinating movie if someone ever decided to
film it.
Thanks for writing that up for us.
Inti
The Parkers - Sonja, Aug/25/1999 06:39:46
Wouldn't that make a wonderful film Inti?! And one guess who should play
Cynthia's
Comanche warrior!
I read a novel once, based on Cynthia Parker's story. Can't remember the
author, and
can't find the book - but I do remember the name of the warrior was 'Wanderer'.
(I
think the author used the word 'Nacoma' - I of course have no idea if this
is the correct
word for 'wanderer' in Comanche.
It was a beautifully written novel and I enjoyed it immensely. According
to this story
Cynthia had a few other children as well as Quanah. Her Comanche love though,
died a
slow and painful death in the end, partly from a head injury, and partly
from pining for
Cynthia, who had already been re-captured by taken back to her white family
by that
point - that was pretty awful and I remember had me in tears!
It might be worth trying to find this book again.......!
