REFLECTION:

Nearly two-thirds of the people of the world
never get enough to eat,
while the other third buys diet pills
because it eats too much.
During His ministry,
Christ multiplied bread and fish to feed thousands.
He left us His Body and Blood
as the spiritual food for the entire world.

PETITION:

Saint Francis of Assisi,
you are remembered for your heroic fasting
and for your spirit of prayer.
You were a model of patience and resignation
in all your sicknesses.
Help me to make a virtue
of my present necessity
and implore God's mercy
that I may nourish myself
on His Word and the Bread of Heaven.
 

GOD'S WORD AND PRACTICE

GOD'S WORD:

"It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless.
The words I spoke to you are spirit and life."
(Jn 6:63)

PRACTICE:

Since for your body's health you must now fast,
accept it and make it a prayer
that your fasting brings you spiritual health as well.
 
 

Prayer Before The Crucifix

Behold, O kind and gentle Jesus,
I kneel before You and pray
that you would impress upon my heart
the virtues of faith, hope and charity,
with true repentance for my sins
and a firm purpose of amendment.
At the same time,
with sorrow,
I meditate on your five precious wounds,
having in mind the words which David spoke in prophecy:
"They have pierced my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones."
(Ps 22)
