Novena to Saint Rita of Cascia

Sixth Day


We cannot sufficiently admire, O Saint Rita, the spirit of prayer and penance forming the distinctive mark of thy holiness by which thy life became a continuous garland of prayers, fasts, scourgings, contemplation, with ecstasies and raptures with God; thy food, bread and water, mixed with ashes, incense and tears; thy couch a hard rough board; the hair shirt, discipline, the burning hand, then a foot, were painful means thou didst employ to subjugate the passions. Ah, Saint Rita! we do the reverse. When we are assailed by terrible passions, far from mortifying them, we encourage them, and worse, still go in search of what will lead to eternal perdition. We recognize the imperative necessity of penance and prayer, and beseech thee to obtain for us from Jesus Christ the favor that through prayer and resistance we may never again fall into sin, but may be made worthy to share everlasting joy with thee. (Recite now, Our Father..., Hail Mary..., Glory be to the Father...)

Supplication to Saint Rita

Holy Patroness of those in need, Saint Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favors has been called the "Advocate of the Helpless," and even of the Impossible, Saint Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus, that thou canst obtain from Him anythings thou dost ask, on account of which, all have confidently have recourse to thee in the hope of comfort or relief; be propitious to thy supplicants and show thy power with God in their behalf; be lavish of thy favors now as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases for the greater glory of God, the spreading of thy devotion and the consolation of those who trust in thee. We promise, if our petition be granted, to glorify thee by making known thy favore, and to bless thee and sing thy praises forever. Relying then on thy merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask of thee: (Here mention your request)
 

Obtain My Request For Me

To Each of the following respond with,
"Obtain my request for me"

By thy singular merits of thy childhood,

By thy perfect union with the Divine Will,

By the heroic suffering during thy married life,

By the consolation thou didst experience at the conversion of your husband,

By the anguish that filled thy heart at the murder of thy husband,

By the sacrifice of thy children, rather than see them greviously offend God,

By the miraculous entrance into the convent,

By the severe penance and three times daily bloody sourgings,

By thy suffering from the wound received from the thorn of thy Crucified Saviour,

By the divine love which consumed thy heart,

By the remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, on which alone thou didst subsist for four years,

By the happiness with which thou didst part from the trials to join thy Divine Spouse,

By the perfect example thou dist give to the people of every state of life.

Pray for us, Saint Rita, that we may be made worthy of the Promises of Christ.
