Novena to Saint Rita of Cascia

Fifth Day

  From childhood, O Saint Rita, thou knowest the dangerous rocks on which our human nature is wrecked; towering ambition, vile interests, sensual pleasures; and thy horror of these preserved thee in thy baptismal innocence. Thou who didst detest, deprived of thy husband and sons, thou didst not feel safe in the world but didst beg of to place thee in a convent Jesus, which He did by a stupendous miracle, after thou hadst been three times rejected by the community. The desire was now gratified, and bidding a last farewell to the world, thou didst bind thyself forever to Jesus by the solemn vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Happy art thou, O Holy Rita! Unhappy are we, crushed by the weight of our ambition, under the yoke of our base passions, which lead us to eternal ruin! O! obtain for us from Jesus that henceforth we may love heavenly things alone; that casting aside all worldly wickedness, we may, chaste in heart and mind, receive the hundredfold recompense promised to all who despise the false and vain goods of this world. (recite now, Our Father..., Hail Mary..., Glory be to the Father...)
 

Supplication to Saint Rita

  Holy Patroness of those in need, Saint Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favors has been called the "Advocate of the Helpless", and even of the Impossible, Saint Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus, that thou canst obtain from Him anything thou dost ask, on account of which, all have confidently have recourse to thee in the hope of comfort or relief; be propitious to thy suppliants and show thy power with God in their behalf; be lavish of thy favors now as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases for the greater glory of God, the spreading of thy devotion and the consolation of those who trust in thee. We promise, if our petition be granted, to glorify thee by making known thy favor, and to bless thee and sing thy praises forever. Relying then on thy merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask of thee: (Here mention your request)
 

Obtain For Me My Request

  To each of the following, respond: Obtain my request for me"

By the singular merits of thy childhood,

By thy perfect union with the Divine Will,

By the heroic suffering during thy married life,

By the consolation thou didst experience at the conversion of your husband,

By the anguish that filled thy heart at the murder of thy husband,

By the sacrifice of thy children, rather than see them grievously offend God,

By the miraculous entrance into the convent,

By the severe penance and three times daily bloody scourgings,

By thy suffering from the wound received from the thorn of thy Crucified Saviour,

By the divine love which consumed thy heart,

By the remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, on which alone thou didst subsist for years,

By the happiness with which thou didst part from the trials to join thy Divine Spouse,

By the example thou didst give to the people of every state of life.

Pray for us, Saint Rita, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
