Novena In Honor Of Saint Rita of Cascia
Day
Four
How great, O Saint
Rita, was thy love for God and thy neighbor!
Who can picture the
countless sighs and scalding tears of compassion
in which thou didst spend
days and
nights dwelling on the
passion of thy Crucified Love?
Who can understand the
sublimity of thy
frequent raptures and
ecstasies in God,
so frequent as to render
thee insensible and apparently dead?
The love of thy
neighbor was
known to the poor, the sick
among the sisterhood, the afflicted
and erring of each sex and
every condition, each of whom thy
boundless character embraced
in the mercy of Jesus Christ.
Unhappy we who have hearts
of stone for the needs, spiritual or corporeal,
of our neighbors, yet we
permit ourselves to be led away by a blind
and culpable passion.
O! obtain for us, Saint
Rita, from thy beloved
Jesus, that our hearts may
be softened, and our affections guided
by the purest love of God
and our neighbor; so that, beginning now
to imitate thee, we may be
united after death to that Uncreated
Love that renders thee so
glorious and happy in Paradise.

Supplication to Saint Rita
Holy Patroness of those in need, Saint Rita,
whose pleadings before thy
Divine Lord are irresistible,
who for thy lavishness in
granting favors has been called the "Advocate of the
Helpless",
and even of the Impossible,
Saint Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified,
so patient and of such
compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus,
that thou canst obtain from
Him anything thou dost ask, on account of which,
all have confidently have
recourse to thee in the hope of comfort or relief;
be propitious to thy
suppliants and show thy power with God in their behalf;
be lavish of thy favors now
as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases for the greater
glory of God, the spreading of thy devotion and the consolation
of those who trust in thee.
We promise, if our petition
be granted, to glorify thee by making it known thy favor,
and to bless thee and sing
thy praises forever.
Relying then on thy merits
and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask of thee:

By the singular merits of thy childhood,
By thy perfect union with the Divine Will,
By the heroic suffering during thy married life,
By the consolation thou didst experience at the conversion of your husband,
By the anguish that filled thy heart at the murder of thy husband,
By the sacrifice of thy children, rather than see them grievously offend God,
By the miraculous entrance into the convent,
By the severe penance and three times daily bloody scourgings,
By thy suffering from the wound received from the thorn of thy Crucified Saviour,
By the divine love which consumed thy heart,
By the remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, on which alone thou didst subsist for four years,
By the happiness with which thou didst part from the trials to join thy Divine Spouse,
By the perfect example thou didst give to the people of every state of life.
Pray for
us, Saint Rita, that we may be made worthy of the Promises of
Christ.
