Novena in Honor of Saint Rita of Cascia

Third Day

  What grief was thine,
O Saint Rita! on learning that awful news of thy husband's murder.
What bitter tears thou didst shed,
particularly at the terrible thought that his soul
may have been unprepared to meet his Eternal Judege.
Resigned to the just dispensations of God,
unmindful of the miserable state to which thou wast reduced,
thou didst place thyself and thy two sons in the hands of thy Jesus.
O how many prayers arose to Him fo rthe salvation of that soul softened to thee,
and for the pardon of his inhuman murderers.
And learning thy sons were plotting vengeance on these,
thou didst pray that their hearts might be changed,
or that they might be taken out of the world
rather than be allowed to execute their designs.
In thy magnanimity thou didst not weep
when deprived of both sons at the same time, but thanked Jesus for having
lovingly heard thy prayer and taken them to Himself in their innocence.
How miserable are we who cannot
pardon the slightest offense,
nor make any sacrifice for the glory of God and the salvation of our own
and our own and our neighbor's soul.

Obtain, O Rita, from thy Jesus,
that we may pardon our enemies for love of Him,
and ever prefer His love to
the love of self and all that is dear to us,
so that being worthy of the pardon of our own sings, we may
receive an eternal reward in Paradise.

(Recite now, Our Father..., Hail Mary..., Glory be to the Father...,)

Supplication to Saint Rita

Holy Patroness of those in need, Saint Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord
are irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favors has been called the
"Advocate of the Helpless," and even of the Impossible,
Saint Rita, so humble so pure, so mortified,
so patient and of such compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus,
that thou canst obtain from Him anything thou dost ask,
on account of which, all have confidently have recourse to thee in the hope of comfort or relief; be propitious to thy suppliants and show thy power with God in their behalf;
be lavish of thy favors now as thou hast been
in so many wonderful cases for the greater glory of God,
the spreading of thy devotion and the consolation of those who trust in thee.
We promise, if our petition be granted,
to glorify thee by making known thy favor, and to bless thee and
sing thy praises forever.
Relying then on thy merits and power
before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask of thee:

(Here mention your request)

Obtain My Request For Me

To each of the following, respond:
"Obtain My Request For Me"

By the singular merits of thy childhood,

By thy perfect union with the Divine Will,

By the heroic suffering during thy married life,

By the consolation thou didst experience at the conversion of your husband,

By the anguish that filled thy heart at the murder of thy husband,

By the sacrifice of thy children, rather than see them grievously offend God,

By the miraculous entrance into the convent,

By the severe penance and three times daily bloody sourgings,

By thy suffering from the wound received from the thorn of thy Crucified Saviour,

By the divine love which consumed thy heart,

By the remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, on which alone thou didst subsist for four years,

By the happiness with which thou didst part from the trials to join thy Divine Spouse,

By the perfect example thou didst give to the people of every state of life.

Pray for us, Saint Rita, that we may be made worthy of the Promises of Christ.
