Novena In Honor of Saint Rita of Cascia
First Day of The Novena
Behold me, O Saint Rita, at thy
feet to prove my profound veneration for thee,
to learn from thee the path
of virtue,
and to obtain from God,
through thy intercession,
the grace to follow it unto
death. At seven years of age thou didst
become remarkable for every
virtue:
Wisdom, Modesty, Love of
Retirement, Piety, A Spirit of Prayer, Penance, and
Contempt for the World and
its vanities.
Happy thou
who knowest so well from childhood,
how to correspond with
Divine Grace!
Happy thou who didst then
begin to
lay the foundation of thy
holiness!
Oh! how different I have
been and still am from thee!
Absorbed in the vanities
of the world, heavenly
things weary me;
my faults increase daily,
and the idea of penance terrifies me.
Obtain for
me, Oh! Saint Rita,
who hast such power with
God, obtain for me compunction and a new life.
Obtain for me
that, if I have not followed
thy innocence,
I may imitate thy penance,
and one day receive the precious reward reserved
in Heaven for the innocent
or repentant.
(Recite
now, Our Father....., Hail Mary...,Glory be to the Father...)
Supplication to Saint Rita
Holy Patroness of those in need, Saint Rita,
whose pleadings before thy
Divine Lord are irresistible,
who for thy lavishness in
granting favors has been
called the "Advocate of the Helpless,"
and even of the Impossible,
Saint Rita, so humble, so pure, so
mortified, so patient and of
such compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus,
that thou canst obtain from
Him anything thou dost
ask, on account of which,
all have confidently have
recourse to thee in the hope of comfort or relief;
be propitious to thy
suppliants and show thy
power with God in their behalf;
be lavish of thy favors now
as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases
for the greater glory of
God,
the spreading of thy
devotion and the consolation of those who trust in thee.
We promise, if our
petition be granted, to
glorify thee by making known thy favor,
and to bless thee and sing
thy praises forever.
Relying then on
thy merits and power before
the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask of thee:

By the singular merits of
thy childhood,
By thy perfect union with
the Divine Will,
By the consolation thou
didst experience at the conversion of your husband,
By the anguish that filled
thy heart at the murder of thy husband,
By the sacrifice of thy
children, rather than see them grievously offend God,
By the miraculous entrance
into the convent,
By the severe penance and
three times daily bloody scourgings,
By thy suffer from the wound
received from the thorn of thy Crucified Saviour,
By the divine love which
consumed thy heart,
By the remarkable devotion
to the Blessed Sacrament,
on which alone thou didst
subsist for four years,
By the happiness with which
thou didst part from the trials to join thy Divine Spouse,
By the perfect example thou
didst give to the people of every state of life.
Pray for us Saint Rita, that
we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
