Wilmington, NC and it's Cape Fear River was the breadline for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, providing all manner of commodities for the citizens of the city and troops throughout the South.

In the present day, fishing boats like the Fort Sumter above, try to keep some of Wilmington's river trade alive.

This page is my final project for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington History Department. All I have learned to do as a historian culminates in this website. These pages will continue to be added to after the degree is finished as there is a masters thesis and dissertation in here somewhere. Unless otherwise noted, this site is property of Tammy L. Colson. This site is not endorsed, hosted, or censored by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, but it is being graded by Dr. Virginia Stewart, Director of Public History, and Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle, Jr., my mentor and friend. I hope my work is up to their standards. Please visit my university in person or on the web, it is a fabulous place to get an education, despite being hurricane central.
