This document is not intended for any commercial purpose, real or imaginary. It exists primarily out of curiosity about both the Japanese language and the changes between the Japanese and English versions of the game. If you're interested in the game, go out and buy it if you haven't already... a summary of what happens can't compare to actually playing it. A worthwhile game with an engaging plot, even if the graphics were dated even when it was released.

Credit goes to Deathlike2's FF4 Algorithms FAQ as the source of most of my technical information on damage formulas, etc. Substantial amounts of other information, including character growth data and monster scripts, come from the data dumps found on a Japanese site for a program called ff_analyzer.

All information here is based on the Japanese Super Famicom Final Fantasy IV and the English Super Nintendo Final Fantasy II v1.1 unless otherwise noted. I typically ignore the PSX, GBA, and DS remakes, and the Japanese EasyType version is mentioned only in passing. Contrary to what many seem to believe, FF2US is *not* a port of the EasyType. While they do have a number of similarities, the Easy Type contains changes not found in any other version.
Lines that are colored like these are my comments, text in gold consists of actions and such that the dialog doesn't explain, and this teal is messages from the game (e.g., "You got a potion").
If I'm not too comfortable with how I translated something, I've put a * after it. A (*) stands for something that I can't figure out even well enough to guess.
Trying to come of with English approximations of name suffixes doesn't work too well, and it doesn't seem right to drop them, so I'm just leaving them as is. If you need an explanation, go here: name suffixes.
Original (JP version) text, my translation, and the official English (NA version) translation are displayed side-by-side in columns for easier viewing, and to allow comparisons.
