Life and Magic sources raise maximum HP and MP, respectively, by a random value from +3 to +7.

If you're obsessive (or cheat) and collect enough sources, you can raise both HP and MP even beyond 999. The menus display 999 for all values over 999, presumably until the value gets so high that it overflows.

Power, speed, and intelligence sources give +3 to their respecitve attributes, and can raise them to a maximum of 999, though it's unrealistic to get enough to actually do so.

Interestingly, even if an attribute is already at 999, putting on equipment with bonuses (most notably the Egg Ring) or gaining levels can raise it even higher, though it still displays as only(!) 999 in the menus.

GUT has a maximum value of 199, and using Bravery sources is the only way to raise it. Each one gives +3 GUT.

I'm amazed that the NA version staff was able to come up with so many different varieties of cider...

The Purifying drop is found only in the Ancient Cave, and is the only way to uncurse items there.

The Prayer to the heavens appears in a chest somewhere on floor 20 or below once per trip into the Ancient Cave, and is the only way to leave without either dying to the monsters or clearing the entire dungeon.

きのみ (ki no mi), often written 木の実, can also refer to nuts or berries. Basically, it seems to mean anything edible that grows on a tree.

It's odd that the Frying pan is listed with the swords and knives. It isn't one (unless it's a really strange pan!), but it even has the sword icon in-game.

There may be a pun... ふり回す (furimawasu) can mean "to wield", "to show off", and "to abuse".

I prefer "Knife of light" since it's clear that way that "light" is a noun, and not an adjective referring to weight.

The kukri, or khukuri, is a type of knife from Nepal. The blade is slightly curved, with the sharp edge on the inner side, and a notch near the hilt. The shape of the notch has religious signifigance in Hinduism.

The gladius was a short sword used by the Romans. While it had sharp edges, it was generally used to stab, as a good thrust could penetrate armor.

The scimitar is a curved slashing sword. It was widely used in the Middle East.

The NA name change was apparently careless, as it gave this sword the same name as the Killer sword.

Berserkers were Norse warriors known for going into animalistic battle frenzies.

The estoc was a long, straight, and very rigid sword designed to stab opponents wearing metal armor.

Spelling chosen to correspond with the rendition of ハイデッカ as Heidecker. May also be a pun on でかい, a slangish word for "huge".

The NA version name change was apparently careless, as it gave this sword the same name as the Blood sword.

Also called a hand-and-a-half sword, the bastard sword is a straight two-edged sword larger than a one-handed sword, but smaller than a two-handed one. The name is because it's sort of the bastard offspring of both sizes.

Despite the description, all weapons in this game are one-handed.

Zircon is a mineral, ZrSiO4, that is commonly used as imitation diamond. It's neither as hard nor as valuable as actual diamond, but it's also less cliché.

こだい (kodai) here and たいこ (taiko) elsewhere mean the same thing—ancient—but I'm translating this as "archaic" and the other as "ancient" to avoid giving two swords the same name. In any case, this sword sounds older, being mythic rather than merely legendary.

Compare to the Ga Iath spell. This should be the Zap Sword in the NA version to be consistent.

Also called the Frankish axe, the francisca was a smallish axe that could be thrown or used hand-to-hand.

It's likely that this isn't "rainy" as in "rain", but rather a type of axe or a similar-sounding name. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any likely candidates.

こんごう (kongou) is an older term for diamond, but is also the name of the thunder god Vajra's weapon.

The morning star is a weapon that combines bludgeoning with piercing by putting spikes on a metal head. Sources differ as to whether a morning star is a particular type of mace, with the head attached directly to the handle, or more like a flail, with the head attached to the handle by a short chain.

A wand is short and thin, and used in fantasy to amplify or store magic. It seems an unlikely choice for a striking weapon, since it's simply too small to cause much damage, and too thin to take the strain, Might work to poke a few eyes out, though...

A flail, as a weapon, has one or more blunt objects, usually spiked metal balls, attached to the handle by chains.

Oddly, 鞭 (muchi), the Japanese word for whip, can also mean rod. I'm guessing it basically refers to anything suitable for flogging.

A trident is a three-pronged spear. In Western mythology, they are the weapons of choice for mermen.

A halberd is similar to a spear, but also has an axe-like blade by the point, and usually a hook or point on the back of the blade. It can be used much like both spears and axes, and the hook can drag opponents to the ground.

A lance is a spear specifically adapted for use in mounted combat.

The Freeze bow's normal attack allows you to pick targets, like casting magic, but doesn't seem to lose any effect when multitargetting.

Though しんじゅ (shinju) does mean "pearl" when written 真珠, the meaning "divine gift", written 神授, seems more appropriate, especially given the description.

The word katyusha comes from the character Katyusha Maslova from a Tolstoy novel. It's just one of those simple, sometimes decorated, curved hairbands that girls often wear. If you really don't know what I mean, do a Google image search on カチューシャ for dozens of examples. Apparently, Katyusha wore this sort of hairband.

A cloche is a bell-shaped women's hat. It was popular with flappers in the 1920s.

メット (METTO) is short for ヘルメット (HERUMETTO) = "helmet".

たいま (taima) are Shinto charms. The word can also mean hemp, but given the description and MGR bonus, the former meaning is more likely.

Agni is a Hindu god of fire. Rather different from "agony".

Indra is a Hindu god of thunder.

I've had the hardest time trying to figure out what "yasha" really means. Several dictionaries define it as a female demon or she-devil, some putting female in brackets to indicate that it's not necessarily female but generally is. Some sources refer to a mythical fearsome creature in Buddhism. Several sources on Japanese mythology say they're vampire bats thought to be reincarnated from women consumed by anger. Still others indicate a vampiress.

My best guess is that the demonic meaning comes from Buddhism in general, and that the notion of angry women and bats came from mixing with Japanese culture, so than in Japan at least, it's some of all of the above. I'd have to ask around to confirm this, but I figure the concept of "yasha", like creatures in Westen mythology, isn't cleary defined even for natives. But it looks as though it would generally include the notions of evil, vampiric, and female.

Anyway, かんざし (kanzashi) is much less problematic. It's a fancy ornamental hairpin.

The above two descriptions or effects appear to be reversed. The descriptions and effects of the Highpower ring and Muscle ring S are similarly inconsistent.

Yes, the Egg ring really is this ridiculously powerful (on the other hand, it's also quite difficult to get). Though the values never display as above 999, the game DOES keep track of the exact values, and raising stats further DOES make a difference. The exception is GUT, which will not go over 199 no matter what.

As seen in some descriptions, ひせき (hiseki) is 秘石 = "secret" + "stone".

Actually, まい (mai) is just a counter for flat objects, but it's obvious by context that it's counting coins.

おふだ (ofuda) are paper charms. They're often seen around Shinto shrines. Anime characters will sometimes throw them at monsters to attack.

Using the Magic lamp hits all enemies with what appears to be a Spread buster attack (refer to IP skills).

Keys 26 through 30 have no descriptions and cannot be obtained without cheating. They are likely extra slots reserved for keys or other plot items. Note that if you start numbering from the Door key, these numbers match up.

Equip this and attack, and it runs through practically every spell/skill effect in the game, but doesn't have any real effect. Most likely a debugging item.

Odds are this is just here to mark the end of the item list. This suggests that they didn't fix the number of possible items during development. Incidentally, it has no attack animation (the user just stands there as the damage appears).
