Lined Mittens
Sizes Toddler [ Child's small, medium, large]
MATERIALS:
Bulky Weight Yarn 60 [70-80-95] yards
# 8 double pointed needles
# 10 double pointed needles
2 small stitch holders
3 stitch markers (2 of same color and one of another color
Gauge: 3 1/2 stitches equals one inch
DIRECTIONS:
*With size 8 needles cast on 'loosely' 18 [20-22-26] stitches.
*Divide stitches evenly on three needles. Form a triangle with the needle with
the first cast on stitch in the left hand.
*Insert the fourth needle into the first stitch on the left hand needle and
knit. This joins the round. Make sure you keep the stitch firm. Knit the next
stitch and place a marker. This will help you remember where you started your
round.
*Begin knitting in a K1, P1 ribbing around all three needles. Continue until
you have knitted the ribbing for 2 [2-2 1/2-2 1/2] inches.
*Change to #10 double pointed needles and knit in stockinette stitch { K1row,
P1 row }for 2 rows.
THUMB:
Row 1: K 8[9-10-12] stitches, place a marker on your needle, increase 1 stitch
in each of the next 2 stitches, place a marker. Knit to the end of the round.
Row 2: Knit one row.
Row 3: Knit to first marker.
Slip marker and increase in next stitch, K to 1 stitch before next marker. Increase
in that stitch, slip marker and K to the end of the round. Continue to repeat
rows 2 & 3, increasing 2 stitches between markers on each row 3 until you have
8[8-10-10]stitches between markers. End with having completed row 2.
* On next row knit to marker. Remove marker and slip stitches just worked on
to a holder. Knit to second marker, remove marker. Leave those 8[8-10-10] stitches
on your needle. Slip remaining stitches on to another stitch holder.
Note: I use a piece of yarn for this as it keeps all the stitches together.
Remember to slip the marker identifying the beginning of the round when you
move your stitches to a holder or piece of yarn.
*Work on the 8[8-10-10] stitches until the thumb measures 3/4[1-1 1/2 -1 3/4]
above the last gusset increase. Decrease in the following manner:
Row 1: K2 tog across row.
Row 2: P2 tog across row, if one stitch remains Purl it.
*Break yarn leaving a 6 inch tail and draw through remaining stitches. Sew the
thumb seam. The above can be done on the dp needles if you want to do it. I
do it that way but for those that are uncomfortable with doing that I have given
the seam directions for the thumb.
BODY OF MITTEN:
* Slip stitches from holders or yarn back on to three needles dividing evenly.
Be sure to slip the marker for the beginning of the round as you are doing this.
Have stitches begin and end at thumb.
* Pick up two stitches at the base of the thumb, with the fourth needle and
continue to knit to marker. Continue knitting on the 18[20-22-26] stitches until
the mitten measures 3[3 1/2-4 1/2-5 1/2] or desired length of the child's hand.
Decreases for top of mitten:
Row 1: K2, K2 tog * repeat around, K any remaining stitches before marker.
Rows 2 & 4: Knit around
Row 3: K1, K2 tog * repeat around, K any remaining stitches before marker.
Rows 5 and 6: K2 tog * repeat around, K any remaining stitches before marker.
Break yarn leaving a six inch tail. Draw through remaining stitches and secure
the yarn. Go to the ribbing at the beginning and secure the tail. This is where
you can pull together the first stitch if it is too loose, the secure the yarn.
PUT A PIN IN THE FIRST STITCH KNIT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MITTEN. THIS IS IMPORTANT
FOR MATCHING THE MITTEN AND THE LINING.
