Meet Cailleon, our webmaster
Oh my Gosh, what is there to say about me? Well, I'm a 31 years old, have one
2 1/2 year old daughter, two teenage step-daughters, one kitten, one dog, one
husband. I'm native German, born in Cologne, lived in Mainz close to Wiesbaden
and Frankfurt for 26 years until I married Darrin, my better half. Then moved
to Clarksville, TN and Savannah, GA. I used to work as a secretary for IBM and
General Motors Germany - now I'm a Stay-At-Home-Mom.
My favorite movies are: "Merlin", "The Lost Boys", and "Young
Guns", my favorite music ranges from Guns'N'Roses to Celtic Tunes - I love
every music except for Classic and Rap. My favorite foods are mild mexican dishes
and Doritos.
I have long black hair, green eyes and I'm still thinking about getting my nose
pierced. I'd like to have a tatoo but that would challenge my husband's wedding
vows.
I have been knitting and crocheting for over 20 years. In Grade School we were
taught knitting and crocheting but I didn't understand it back then and to my
shame I have to admit....I didn't care either. A few years down the road I picked
up hooks and needles again and learned from magazines how to make dresses and
skirts for my dolls and then simple pullovers for myself. Unfortunately, my
mother had never any interest in crafty things, except for sewing. I would "steal"
her sewing machine when she was at work and "re-arrange" my clothing.
I'm still sewing my own curtains and clothing for my daughter today.
What I love most about knitting and crocheting is drafting the design. I just
can't follow a pattern. The neck-down-pullover pattern from Lorraine (posted
here on this site) is about the only thing I made following a pattern to the
end. I'm very anxious to teach my daugther how to knit and crochet and also
how to sew. To me those are ancient techniques passed down from generation to
generation to keep our cultural heritage alive.
Only recently I purchased my first knitting machine, a Bond ISM (Incredible
Sweater Machine). It's more of a hand knitting machine, single bed, ribbing,
cables and other fancy stitches have to be manipulated by hand. The finished
garments still have a hand knit look. I figured out how to knit socks on the
machine the other day (without having to read any instructions etc.) and I made
two Christmas stockings for my dog and husband, oops....husband and dog that
is. Only a matter of time until I can make the socks small enough to fit my
feet. Which brings me to the next subject: SOCKS!!!
Winters in Germany can get pretty cold, in fact, we had 6 inches of snow yesterday.
I learned how to knit socks with double point needles a while ago and I wasn't
able to stop knitting socks ever since. Only one pair of my finished socks were
for myself, I donated most of the socks to charity or gave them away to friends/relatives.
The next thing I really enjoy doing is maintaining this website. I have a lot
of fun being the webmaster and I really enjoy seeing this site grow with everyone's
participation. I do have my own website, all about knitting. Unfortunately,
I don't have enough time to keep it updated all the time. If you would like
to check it out: http://knitwitch.8m.com
A while ago someone on another knitlist asked "Why do you knit?" and I found this to be interesting as my husband had asked me the same thing. Sure, it's easier to go buy a pair of socks or a sweater and in some cases it might even be cheaper too. Here's my answer: I knit because I like to design things, because it relaxes me, because knitwear is unique and I don't like seeing other people wearing the same clothes as me, and last but not least because it's a tradition that I cherish.
