Synopsis:
If you think this is going to be an even higher-tech version of the original "Knight Rider" series, um, don't hold your breath. It's still got the "young loner on a crusade" but it's not Hasselhoff, and our hero doesn't even OWN a car until the middle of the movie. Turns out, it's an old, junked-out Ford Mustang instead of the sleek Pontiac Firebird you would expect. The story begins with Jake Mcqueen smuggling people who pay him money into a half-way zone. Jake has a huge 4 by 4 truck which he uses to smuggle and it finally breaks down and he is forced to repair it. He gets caught by his brother, who is a marshall in the free territory. On the way to jail, he meets someone who stole Bruce Springsteen's guitar and they agree to be buddies. He is released from jail by Hannah who works for a company called Chrysalis Corp. The head of Chrysalis Corp. is Jared, apparently crippled by some form of Lou Gehrig's disease and relying on artifical machine like parts in order to survive he wants Jake for what he calls a new smuggling game. Hannah shows Jake some pictures provided by Jared of him smuggling and then they hook him up to a machine which allows you to "cyber" with the computer. Hannah explains to Jake that she has managed to get her essence in the computer by accident. She also explains the three minute time window of its use and shows Jake the crystal that powers it. Jared sends his henchman to kill Jake's father, which forces a showdown. Jake goes to his friend, the one who repaired his 4 by 4 and buys a ford mustang and adds missles and shielding to the car, turning it into a futuristic vehicle. He meets up with Hannah again and they rekindle their old love affair. Hannah links up to go cyber and Jared kills her via the link. Jake, seeing the Hannah is dead takes the crystal and the machine and gets his friend to install it into the car. They then add optical to allow Hannah to see Jake. Hannah has control of the car and Jake and her team together to stop Jared and redeem her death. Jake breaks Jared's viles and kicks him in the balls and he dies. The final scene shows Hannah in her image form as Jake wonders where they can go from here. Hannah jokes that they only have three minutes together in cyber and whether Jake can be that quick.
Unexplained facts and tidbits:
The only real Knight Rider reference comes from Jake when he says, "I'm no knight in shinning armor" which gives its nod to the episode of the same name in the Knight Rider series which had Micheal rescuing a young female who got in over her head.
The WB Action Pack premiere of Knight Rider 2010 came on the heels of Universal's attempts to revive Knight Rider in some form or another. It would be three years before Universal would attempt another series then titled Team Knight Rider with closer ideals to the original series.
Hasselhoff was said not to be pleased by this production as he was not enthusiastic about the TKR series of episodes as well. He felt that it strayed too far from what the original series was.
Hyped by the Action Pack network, most reviews of the movie were extremely negative citing the confusing plot line(that i have to agree with) and unrealisitc character development.
Additionally, the movie out-performed all other Universal Action Pack titles in households and male demos, including the Hercules movies that appeared that year before becoming a hit weekly syndicated series in January 1995.
