June 19th

I woke up in pain today. It felt like bad cramps, an odd pressure, and sharp pains every few minutes. I had been on my period for almost three weeks by this time. I wasn't bleeding heavy and this wasn't the first time that this had happened so I wasn't too concerned.

I decided to go on to work and see how I felt as the day went on. I ended up getting to the point that it hurt so bad I was getting near tears and could hardly walk at all. So I called my husband (Bill) to come and get me from work so I could go home and lay down.

I got home and changed into a nightgown and crawled into bed. As long as I was laying still it didn't hurt to bad. I decided that I would make a doctors appointment in the morning.

Bill was invited to go out with a friend so I convinced him it would be OK and that I could page him if I needed him. So he left to go out awhile later.

I was laying in bed and my friend Sarah called. I told her about how I was feeling and she said I needed to go to the Emergency Room. I told her that Bill was gone and she insisted on coming to take me. I got up and got dressed.

We arrived in the ER after a very painful, bumpy ride. I guess we probably sat in the waiting room for over an hour before they took me back. Someone gave me a gown and got me settled in.

Bill arrived at the hospital at some point and was in the waiting room. I didn't have a watch on so I didn't have a clue how long I had been there. He called me on the hospital phone from the lobby and I discovered that I had been waiting for over 2 hours. During that time no one had been in to even check on me. I decided that I was leaving and we would go somewhere else. I told Bill that I was coming out. I got up, got dressed, and walked painfully out the door. I told some hospital staff that were standing there that I was leaving.

It felt like a very long walk back to the lobby. I didn't think I would ever get there. I caught up with Bill in the lobby and we walked outside. The further I walked I felt more and more like I was spinning. I was getting very nauseous and was just trying to make it to a bench I saw maybe twenty feet away. I made it to the bench and sat down and started to cry. Bill asked me if I wanted to go back inside. I said no. I got very queazy and vomited. I started feeling like I was going to pass out so Bill said he was getting the wheelchair and we were going back inside.

He went in and explained that we were coming back in and why. He brought the wheelchair out and all I wanted to do was lay down. Every time I opened my eyes everything would start spinning. He wheeled me inside and I told him to go straight to the bathroom because I was feeling sick again.

I went in to the bathroom and washed my face and rinsed my mouth and just sat with my eyes closed for a bit. I was terrified of what might be wrong with me. I must have been in there too long because the nurse started talking to me through the door asking if I was OK. Finally I opened the door and let them bring me out and we went right to the back. They let Bill come with me this time.

Dr. Szeja came in and told me he was going to do some tests and a pelvic exam. After the tests came back I was told by Dr. Szeja that I was pregnant. Bill just said, "She's What?" Dr. Szeja then explained he thought that I was having a miscarriage. I wasn't sure how to feel about this. I was sad but confused. I had been trying for so long to get pregnant and now this when it finally happened after 10 years. Dr. Szeja also explained that I am Rh negative and that I would have to have a shot to prevent any future pregnancies from spontaneously aborting.

Dr. Szeja informed us that I would have to be taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Womens Hospital for a DNC. So the ambulance was called and after another wait I was on my way.

I don't really remember much about my stay there. I do remember that it was very quiet when we got there. The DNC was done pretty quickly. I woke up feeling kinda groggy but OK to walk so I left.

I was on vacation from work the next week so I took it easy. The bleeding slowly stopped and I was feeling a lot better. I had to go have blood drawn 3 times during the week to check my pregnancy level. The Dr. wanted to make sure that it was dropping. I was not told the results of the tests until I went back to his office for a check in. The levels were not dropping, as a matter of fact one was higher. I still don't understand why this didn't trigger some further tests.

Thursday, July 8, 1999

I woke up again not feeling myself and in pain again. This time I decided to just make an appointment at a different Dr. I told him all the history of the DNC. He did an exam and told me he needed to have blood work and ultrasound done to see what was happening. He sent me to the ER at Carrollwood Community Hospital. I had these tests done there so that results would come back faster. So I left his office and went to ER waited awhile and finally was seen. I gave the history all over again and was taken to a room to have the ultrasound done. The results showed something but they were not set up for GYN so they admitted me to the Womens hospital. I had to take an ambulance again this time it was about twenty minutes away. When I arrived I had to answer all the questions all over again and get settled into my room. It was getting late so they told me that in the morning I would be getting another ultrasound to just try and get some rest over night.

I woke up in the morning and after awhile I was taken to the ultrasound room. The technician informed me that she was going to do an internal exam with this big wand thing. She said it doesn't hurt it's just uncomfortable. She took several pictures and then left the room to consult with someone else. When she came back she told me that she was going to be on the phone with someone that was watching from another screen. She took several more pictures and I was taken back to my room.

The Dr. that was going to handle my case, Dr. Colorado came in awhile later. He explained to Bill and I that it was determined that I definitely had something going on inside but they were unable to tell what it was. All they could see was that there was a mass the size of an orange. Dr. Colorado explained to me that he was going to send a camera in through my belly button and have a look. He was suspecting that I had a tubal pregnancy. Depending on what he found he would go ahead and take care of it. He said if the tube was not ruptured he might be able to save it but if it was ruptured he would have to do a 4-5 inch cut just above my hairline and remove my tube. The procedure was scheduled for 5 that evening.

As soon as I woke up I knew I had lost my tube. I was in big time pain. Dr. Colorado came to talk to me later that day and said that it was the worst rupture that he had seen. He told me that my bowels had tried to stop the rupture by wrapping around my tube. I stayed in the hospital for a few days then went home to recover. I was off work for over a month.
