BMI (body mass index)
BMI = kg / (m x m). Kg = kilograms and m = meters.
 Which translates to, "your BMI equals your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared".
m = inches / 39.37
 Find your height in inches. 1 foot equals 12 inches. I, for example, am 5 feet 5 inches. 5, which is the number of whole feet, times 12 is 60 so 5 feet equals 60 inches. Then add as many additional inches as you have. So I am 65 inches tall.
 Divide your height in inches by 39.37. 65 inches, for example, comes out to be roughly 1.651 m.
(m x m)
 Square your height in meters, which means multiply the number by itself. For example, 1.651 x 1.651 = 2.7258.
kg = pounds x 0.4536
 Find your weight in pounds. I'm sure we all know how to do this by now, eh? Sigh.
 Multiply your weight in pounds by 0.4536. I'm not giving you an example on this one! The number you come out with will be your weight in kilograms.
BMI = kg / (m x m)
 Divide your weight in kilograms by your (m x m) result number. Et voila, your BMI.
Or....just go to BMI calculator
Interpretation. This is the fun part, wheeee.
Basically everyone has approximately the same values of interpretation, but they vary on slight little degrees, and it's maddening to see so much minor disagreement when I just want something solid to pin down. BMI - Body Mass Index is a great, comprehensive site that brings a lot of these variations together. It's mostly where I came up with the scale that I use, from averages and tendencies and compromises between a bunch of the differing viewpoints. The thing about my scale, remember, is that I'm disposed to think that less is better. But I've tried to be reasonable.
 severely underweight = bmi 16 or less
 underweight = bmi 16 to 19
 ideal = bmi 19 to 24
 moderately overweight = bmi 24 to 26
 overweight = bmi 26 to 30
 moderately obese = bmi 30 to 33
 obese = bmi 33 to 40
 morbidly obese = bmi 40 or more
Or there's the Maxim magazine BMI-rating scale:
 10 - 19.9 : Eat a friggin' sandwich already.
 20 - 24.9 : Lookin' good. Well, lookin' slim, anyway.
 25 - 29.9 : Have you put on weight?
 30 - 39.9 : Have you put on a Haitian family?
 40 and over : Move away from those Twinkies and keep your hands above your head.
