: Question: Is that a Midi on your N page? PLEASE tell me it isn't,those things freeze my comp instantly and I wanna read your fic.
I'm not Chris but this problem does
draw my attention.
Anyway a computer locks up when
it runs out of Random Access Memory
so Windows uses the hard drive
to create virtual memory. (RAM Cache-ing)
However VRAM tends to fill up the hard drive
faster than the RAM can refresh itself
and faster than the CPU can process it
all so it just goes into a constant loop
trying to write to and read from the drive
while the CPU is polling for the next instruction.
By this time it's so bogged down it freezes.
Hmmm...they freeze your computer instantly?
Never had a freezeup loading a midi
into Media Player while running Internet Explorer and Netscape Inbox at the same time.
Do you have at least 32 Megabytes
(Anything higher and you shouldn't
have any problems) and at least
a Pentium class CPU? (100 MHZ)
And are you running Internet Explorer
or Netscape or another browser?
Anyway here's what I do to minimize
the chance of lockup until I can upgrade.
First upon Windows 98 loading up,
I immediately close all programs that
aren't vital to Windows operation so
I'm just running the bare minimum
programs to keep Windows running.
Second I pause Task Scheduler.
Third I use Internet Explorer
instead of my Ameritech Netscape
browser. And if I open Netscape
Messenger and keep it minimized.
Finally I do a disk cleanup every once
in a while to keep the Virtual Memory
in the green zone.
If none of this helps then you may
have to do like me and think about upgrading.
It's expensive but the last upgrades
I've gotten so far have been WELL worth it.
(Now if only that friend of ours would
get back to us on upgrading one more time!!!
Then I can run my scanner and ZSNES again!!!)
: Hmmn..if it is..could I have the URL for the stories?
