I just meant that you don't have to rescue the maidens in any particular order. You could rescue them in order, or you could, for example, get all the even numbered ones and then all the odd numbered ones, or you could even rescue them in reverse order. You'd probably have to gather all, or many, of the dungeon treasures before you could rescue the maidens in reverse order, but there's no rule that says you can't just get the treasure from a dungeon and go back for the maidens later.
Of course, there's a recommended order for completing dungeons (the order shown by the numbers on the game's map), but you don't have to do things in that order.
