: Gee, that's exactly my point in Captain N 64; Kevin wasn't the "Chosen One"(for lack of better term), Chris was. THe second Prophecy detailed everything about him, a "Glove of Power", the POwer Glove; "A Mighty Team", the Neo N-Team; and "REstore Terra to it's rightful realm", he used teh Ultimate Warp Zone to send earth back to it's universe. CN 64 is an example of your point.
That's not exactly what I'm trying to say here. If Shao Kahn never killed Kevin, things would've worked out. If not, then someone else playing Punch Out (tm) would've been sucked in.
What I'm sayin is, the time stream can take care of itself. For instance, there is some huge major war where this one general is kickin' some ass, and the war is won because of him.
Now lets say someone goes back in time to assassinate this general. Everything (somehow) works out, and the general is assassinated. But the war is still won, and it turns out the general had been getting all of 'his' ingenious ideas by an underling, and the underling goes on to become a hero. Sure, a few names are changed in the history books, but the outcome is the same.
Sure, history had to fudge a few rules, but hey, who hasn't? I sure wish I had my Chronomancer's guide book (for ad&d)... it had some really good examples and why you can't meet yourself if you go back in time... (*Mental note*---get Chronomancer's guide back from friend).
Another thing is, that like a Dungeon Master for Dungeons and Dragons, the writer of a fanfic is God of that world. Anything can happen. Of course, it helps if it is SOMEWHAT believable, and another word of advise---subtle is better. So my point here is this: If you want time travel in your own stories, go ahead. If you don't, don't.
