Pairings of Gundam Wing: Part One
Hetrosexual

So, I was sitting there one day, and I got to thinking really about the most plausable couples in Gundam Wing. Forget my favorite pairings, seeing as I have a lot of pairings I really like a lot, some yaoi, some yuri and some het. However, the big thing is, aside from the seriously ambiguous hints about Trowa and Quatre, there really isn't any serious basis for a lot of the yaoi couples on the series...not to say that I'm not as eager to find smidgens of anything as the next yaoi-obsessed fangirl...hell, I think it's possible that Duo and WuFei could have found something to do on the Moon other than look over the schematics of their mechs...Heero could have been absolutely facinated with Duo and that's why he didn't kill him and beforehand even registered into a school under Duo's name. Heero and Trowa could have done some fooling around at the circus, as well as Trowa and WuFei. Quatre and Duo could have fooled around at the Magurnac city. Treize and Zechs could have had an experimental affair in their younger years, or it may have continued for a while during the war. Maybe WuFei finally got tired of being alone and decided that Treize's facination with him was enough and he fell for the General.

Then again, I doubt that Treize is a pedophile, especially seeing as he states outright that he loves both of Une's personalities. Zechs and Noin have obviously had some sort of relationship from when they were in school, although it was most probably friendship on Zechs' part until he could get his shit together and Noin merely always remained faithful until they finally ran off to Mars together. Heero is most likely too focussed on the war to deal with that sort of thing, although afterward, he's probably still trying to figure out who he is...who he finds himself attracted to in a realistic sense would have to wait. Duo is most likely bisexual and finds himself facinated by all the cool people around him and probably wouldn't complain if any of them made a pass. Trowa most likely sees the other pilots as younger brothers that need to be protected, with the exception of Duo, who obviously has a lot of the same background and he is convinced that the kid can take care of himself and would very probably resent having someone "taking care" of him, even if it was a simple gesture of help. Or he really could be how he dresses and he's a gay Frenchman that falls for Quatre, who is interested right back. Quatre is probably far too worried about keeping everyone he cares for safe, and is so amazed at the other four pilots, who are all his own age, someone he can call friends...and they don't treat him like the Winner heir; he's another pilot and one that is very capable, intelligent and becomes a defacto leader because of his charisma and ability to plan. WuFei may not have particularly been madly in love with his wife, but he does respect her a great deal; enough to believe that her spirit resides within his Gundam, and is in mourning for her. Being a rather traditional young man, he's going to take this very seriously, and will focus on the fact that he is in mourning for the woman he was married to.

As for the girls, well...Relena is obviously facinated by Heero. Everyone is. That's his job as the hero of the series; everyone is facinated by him and wants to catch his attention. Perhaps there's a serious obsession here; she's a fifteen-year-old girl, after all. and on top of it, much like Quatre, she's amazed that someone isn't fauning over her every move. That would certainly catch my attention if I were in her position. Hilde pretty obviously has a crush on Duo, but I think he might be a bit oblivious as to how deeply her affections run...until she hears him with the freedom fighters on L-2 and she realizes that he isn't the perfect, happy-go-lucky sweetheart she imagined him to be. Catherine has a tendency to want to take care of people and Trowa is no exception. There's a good possibility that being older, she may have actually remembered more of their parents' features and whatnot, and recognizes Trowa automatically as her lost brother, Triton. Maybe she's just being hopeful. It doesn't matter; she's happy being able to help out someone she sees as a genuinely nice kid. Dorothy has issues. It has been speculated by myself and Chibi Hentai-chan that there was something very serious that happened when she met Quatre before; and the way they address one another strongly suggests that they did have some sort of previous knowledge of one another. However, the meeting obviously did not go well, and while Dorothy still has a hostile view of Quatre, he has grown up from the spoiled little snot that he was, but there is still a feeling of animostiy there. And Sally...I really think she sees WuFei as a younger brother. She was raised in China and it would stand to reason that she would recognise mourning garb when she saw it. She was a field medic before she went AWOL from the Federation Army and probably got very good at reading people's body languages; it's a very good skill to have when someone is dying and says they want the truth, but in all honesty couldn't handle it. Noin is obviously in love with Zechs and has been since they were in the academy together. She knows who he really is, and she does everything she can to aid him in both personal and professional situations. Once again, this seems to be a case much like Hilde's, only Noin is old enough to understand that her shining prince isn't perfect, she accepts that and still respects and loves him. Lady Une does love Treize in many ways. She is smitten by him, obviously, is willing to do everything including kill for him, and there are many times she may not understand his motivations, but she tries to. She also tries a bit too hard to get the attention she already has; she wants everything to be perfect so that Treize doesn't have to push himself far past the boundaries he's already willingly bounded over.

Then again, for all we know, I could completely be full of shit. That's the most likely course of action, seeing as I tend to see strange things in interpersonal relations. Take for example, my "realistic" pairings. These are pairings that I know I'm very probably way off on, but I have my own ideas on why they would work, etc. and so I'm just going to go off on my own rant (as if this wasn't long enough to begin with!) about the couples I've come up with. I will give the warning right now that these are hetrosexual couplings, just because that seems to be the way it's most likely to work out, and because I'm a twisted monkey that has bizare thoughts like these pop into my head at random moments. I don't want any flames from this; it's all for fun, just like everything else here. I'm not anti-yaoi, nor am I anti-het, anti-yuri, anti-threesome, anti-orgy...I do tend to have a thing about pedophilia and beastiality, but that's a whole other rant. Such as: Just because I can't see the utter plausibility of Treize with any of the Gundam pilots doesn't mean I don't appreciate a well-written, thought out Treize and WuFei, Treize and Zechs, Treize and Quatre...who knows. It's all about perspective and ingenuity. If you can make it believable, there's a good chance I'll think a Treize and Noin or a WuFei and Une is great. Dorothy could be boinking Abdul and I'd go for it if it was done with a well-developed plot and good storytelling.

Anyway, so back to the whole thing that started this mad rant: realistically plausible het couples in Gundam Wing. Wow. It took all this time to get to one simple set of listings. Figures. So, without further adieu, here they are:

Heero and Hilde. I know it seems odd, but for all of the people that feel that Duo is good for Heero in the sense that he needs the balance of someone playful but stubborn enough to not walk away, Hilde would be the perfect female counterpart. She wouldn't take any of his shit and would be supportive when he needed it. I hate to say it, but I really think Duo would get bored very quickly and want to move onto something that wouldn't require so much personal energy, whereas Hilde is still idealistic enough that she would really believe that she could help Heero and change him without putting him in a situation where he would be under constant scrutiny, which he would be with Relena. He could be comfortable with Hilde; he wouldn't have to force himself to put on airs to keep her from getting negative publicity because of his "antisocial" attitude. He would never be able to relax around Relena; he'd be too busy focusing on his mission to protect her. Also, Hilde's willingness to stay by him would help immensely when he finally does start to become more comfortable with his feelings; something that Duo wouldn't understand is needed, because he would have taken off beforehand and Relena would be far too busy trying to make certain the world was safe. She wouldn't have the time to devote to what Heero would need; they are both too ambitious to be truly devoted to what one another needs.

Duo and Relena. Forget the silly Princess and the Street Rat Syndrome. Yes, it's a cute idea, yes, it's a popular plot. But, the fact is, Duo Maxwell is no idiot. He knows damn well that Relena is important, but he also realizes that she can go to the bathroom without a tail. Not that he wouldn't tease her about going with her...in fact, his teasing would very probably be a welcoming distraction after a hard day of dealing with politicians and being in the limelight. He could easily pose as her bodyguard, much like Heero is normally set in several stories, with the exception that Duo knows that there really is a time and place to be serious and to be a goofball. He obviously respects her, probably has a bit of a crush, and very probably figures it can't hurt to be seen with someone like her after all the shit he's been through. It's a sort of security, both financially and mentally; he could also use his position to make her see the overlooked problems that he knows about firsthand. And above all, while they would be interesting lovers, each of them is independent enough that they wouldn't require each other's presence continuously, whereas Heero and Hilde are creatures of needing another person to feel secure and safe. They'd have their fights, but it would be nowhere near the sort of knock-down drag out that would occur between Duo and Heero. It's a likely and strangely comfortable match between two people who realize that they have their own agandas in life, but they can help each other in the long run.

Trowa and Sally. Pick yourselves up off the floor. I'm serious. Sally is a caring individual that doesn't smother so much, but she is also terribly caring about the people she feels are important in her life, much the same way both Catherine and Quatre are. However, whereas Catherine is a sister figure to Trowa, and Quatre will be expected as the only male Winner to produce a Winner heir, Sally is free of those restrictions. They share similar attributes; each of them see that the others need a helping hand now and then and are willing to give it, particularly where WuFei is concerned. With his afinity for animals, he could easily go into Veterinary Medicine, just as much as she is likely to continue with Physical Medicine. It may even be likely that Trowa would be willing to go into any sort of field that would help others just as much as Sally. Each have an understanding of mercenary tactics and what it's like living in hard conditions without a permanent home, per se. Because of this the likelihood of Trowa's willingness to settle down, yet want to wander occasionally would fit well with Sally's laid-back manner and adventurous streak. Both are also caring people who are once again, good examples of independent people, and Sally is likely to temper Trowa's introspective brooding. It's a workable idea, if they would get the idea to start it.

Trowa and Dorothy. While he said he pitied her for a lack of emotion, that truly isn't the case. Each one of them are passionate creatures who subdue their emotions through sheer necessity of their situations in life. Dorothy is expected to follow in her bloodline of warriors, seeing as she is obviously unhappy with the thought of being a proper lady of her station. Therefore, emotions and gentle feelings are not acceptable in her position, regardless of the fact that she is obviously a caring person that has a lot of emotion. Trowa was a mercenary; it never pays to care when you fight other peoples' battles for money. It will only disrupt your business. However, Trowa is a caring person, and it shows in the ways he interacts with the other pilots. He would be a tempering influence on her wild impulses, and he obviously understands her well enough that false tears wouldn't get a second glance. She doesn't cry without reason and he knows it; if she does cry, it is for something that she cannot handle on her own and he is willing to be there for her to lean on. He would be able to offer her the type of gentle love she needs without crowding her and in turn, she would stay with him because of it and the inner strength he possesses; he would be able to deal with her, as it were, and that alone would be enough to draw her to him. Media coverage wouldn't faze her in the least; after all, the press is used to seeing Lady Catalonia do some very crazy things. In the end, marrying a drifter and circus clown wouldn't shock any of them.

Quatre and Sylvia Noventa. This would be a good political union that wouldn't have the strained feeling that would come from marrying Dorothy. Also, seeing as it's likely that Quatre's part in the war is going to become public knowledge, it is't going to be seen as very prudent for the Queen of a peaceful kingdom like Sank to marry a former Gundam pilot that destroyed an entire colony, although he came from a pacifist family. The politics alone would be a headache. Sylvia, however, is low-profile enough that while it would generate interest, it would be forgotten shortly afterward. They each are sensible individuals that probably realized from a young age that they were likely going to marry for political reasons and status rather than for any sort of romantic inclinations. Also, Sylvia seems like a good-natured enough girl that she and Quatre could very possibly grow to care for each other very deeply. Also, Sylvia is unlikely to get upset over Quatre's likelyhood of following tradition and taking at least one other wife.

Quatre and Catherine. This would be the perfect addition to Quatre's life. He would marry someone like Sylvia for politics, but it would be easy to see him marrying Catherine for love. Both are gentle, loving people that would support each other emotionally. Quatre needs the sort of comfort that Catherine gives, and Quatre is strong enough to be a loving husband that will be available to her when she would need him. Catherine would be the one to make certain that he stopped work for the day, came home, relaxed and got a good night's sleep, looking after things like children and various parts of the household that Sylvia would not know how to run. The two women would also very likely work well together and would get along with one another, whereas it is unlikely that Sylvia and Dorothy would get along, nor would Catherine be likely to bend to Dorothy's will. Catherine also would understand Quatre's need to have Sylvia as a First Wife, and would understand that while he may not have married her for love, he does respect her and the likelihood of jealousy would not be an issue between the three of them for long.

WuFei and Marimeia. Here is the one that is probably going to bring me a lot of heat. The simple fact is, WuFei is going to feel responsible for the girl who's father he killed. It was very possibly the deciding factor in why he joined her army--he felt it was his duty to keep her safe. Now move on to the fact that arranged marriage for duty is nothing new to him; it's just something that he feels he should do and he will do it, regardless of how he might feel for anyone else, or Marimeia. He would certainly grow to care for her, even if it was in more of a platonic, or even fatherly sense to begin with. He knows that he will be able to care for her and protect her; something he has probably decided he wishes to do in the first place, and marrying her will give him an upper edge and will make his personal mission easier. As for Marimeia, there's a good chance that she would very easily fall for WuFei: he is practical, intelligent, well-bred, and most of all, he knew her father and was someone that the General respected. Being older wouldn't bother her and she would be understand that while he very probably isn't the prince she once invisioned, she would still care deeply for him.

WuFei and Une. After the war is over, all is said and done, and the smoke has cleared, life begins as normal. Most people see WuFei and Sally settling down together, regardless of the fact that's quite obviously his superior officer. So why can't the same apply to the big boss lady? Add to the fact that WuFei will still feel responsible for Marimeia...and seeing as he was the one who took her father from her, it would only be just that he step in to fill that role as well as he possibly can. It's likely that it would be a marriage on paper only; I could see seperate bedrooms very easily in this situation, and while it may not be a passionate relationship, there is a good chance of being able to work together well and there's good indications that they would agree on what would be best for Marimeia. This is not a couple that would swear undying devotion to one another or love; it's a good chance that they would both still love their respective partners from before, being Treize and Meiran, and both would understand that without argument.

WuFei and Relena. This one is plausible, but it won't be for at least ten years after Endless Waltz takes place. Both of them need to do a lot of growing up, but once they do, it would be fitting for them to marry. Once again, WuFei is familliar with the idea of a marriage for social standing and would be suited to the public events pressed on someone of Relena's station. Also, being somewhat solitary by nature, he would be able to spend a lot of time doing as he wanted while Relena was off doing her own little projects. They wouldn't need one another to be there, much the same way that Duo and Relena would be, but at the same time, they would be able to have good conversations, debates and nights out together. In turn, once again, Relena would also be on the recievng end of a capable and intelligent man who could also double as a bodyguard as well as a lover. All around, it would be a solid if not passionate pairing.

Sally and Abdul. This is one of my favorite het pairings in the entirety of fandom. They only met once, and he didn't seem to like her much to begin with; after all, she was in possession of Quatre-sama's Gundam. But out of a war setting, I could see his ability to smile as well as his work ethics being a very likely pull for a strong, intelligent woman like Sally. Regardless of race, I think Abdul is the type of guy to find women pretty, period. Taking someone like Sally, it wouldn't be hard to imagine him being attracted to her, and he certainly isn't a bad-looking guy, either. Yes, I'm saying they would look great together! Also, they were on the same side during the war and would be sympathetic to one another's political views because of it. Even taking all that away, this would be a very likely to be a relationship that would start as a couple of friends meeting at the bar after work; drinking or not wouldn't be an issue, I think, and from there romance is likely between two fun-loving people with a common bond.

As for Zechs and Noin...well, I think there's more than enough support in the show itself that I don't even really need to rant on this.

And Treize and Une are another 'Nuff said for me. They were a couple in everything but outright statement.

So, I think I'll close up this episode and I'll return later with my views on the homosexual and lesbian couplings in part two!
