There's not a whole lot behind the San Carlos Hotel, historywise, but I'll give you what I got. The hotel was built in the 1920's over a sacred water well that had been used by American Indians. The spot had previously been the home of Phoenix, Arizona's first elementary school. Six weeks after the opening of the hotel, on May 7, 1928, a young woman, Leone Jensen, killed herself by jumping from the roof. She was despondent over being jilted by her boyfriend, said to be a bellman at another nearby hotel.
Now three young boys are said to have been seen running through the halls, and the sounds of children laughing and playing come from some of the rooms. The apparition of a crying young woman is also sometimes seen. Sometimes the figure is misty and clouded, but almost everyone agrees this must be the spectre of unfortunate Leone Jensen.
