In 1898 a young man left his fiancée, Mary, at the Golden North Hotel in Skagway, Alaska. He was leaving her there until he came back from mining gold and making his fortune, so they could begin their life together comfortably. He had no idea that he would never see her alive again, or could have possibly imagined that, one hundred years later, she still would be counted among the "guests." Mary contracted pneumonia while her love was away, and she died in room 23, basically choked from her lung infection. Her fiancé either died while in the gold mines or came back too late to bring the money to save her; stories are conflicting.
People in room 23 have often claimed to be awakened by a choking sensation in the middle of the night. Some have even claimed to have seen a figure of a woman, sometimes reaching out as if to choke them. In room 14 guests have seen a "gray light form" moving around. Usually one or more of the observers will feel odd, as if lightheaded or dizzy. This goes on in the early hours of the morning, and is known to fade after a couple of hours. There is no known story or explanation behind this phenomenon.
