Parker Brothers To Sanction Our Rook Tournament?

No George and Grace Parker are not coming to the Beach House but Tournament Director Ken Burton is checking into making the Beach House Rook Tournamnet officially recognized by Parker Brothers the makers of the game. Burton was going through the rule book and noticed that the Consumer Response Department has information about Rook Clubs and Tournaments. " I have no idea if they sanction tournaments or not but if they do, it would be nice to be officially recognized, " Burton said. "Wouldn't it be nice if Parker Brothers had a national tournament and our tournament was a qualifier." Burton hopes to have the information before the Tournament begins.

Who Would Do Such A Thing?

Last year one team (no names - you know who you are) actually challenged the Tournament Director on his seedings for the Tournament. Instead of levying a $10,000 fine on the team and embarrasing them, the Director has chosen to respond with a statistical study. The study shows that based on the Director's seeding , he has been correct 63.1% on all Tournament games. For example, if the #5 seed beats the #6 seed like they are supposed to, it gets counted as a win. If the #6 seed beats the #5 then it is counted as a loss. This study also shows how well teams have performed based on their seedings over the years. If you have a good record it means you win when you are suppose to win and lose when you are suppose to lose.

When Will It HAPpen?

Trying to get that first Rook win has been a tough chore for Hap. After playing in 3 tournaments Hap has managed a dismal 0-6 record with three different partners. With a record and a reputation like that a decent partner may be hard to find. Will Paula stand by her man and save him from further embarrasment and make her first appearance in the Tournament? We don't think so but we feel Hap is a better player than his record shows. With several up and coming children players coming to the big show, Hap should secure a partner but it might cost him.

The Upper Class Still Intact

Last year we unveiled an interesting statistic about the top four teams and how they have basicly dominated all Tournament play. Their overall record dropped a few points but they were a perfect 6-0 against everyone else. Richard-Bob have fared the best in the head to head competition winning 69% (9-4) a few point ahead of Sally-Phyllis (10-6 62%). Shelly -Beth have won a mere 25% (3-9) yet have pounced on lower rated teams with a 93% (15-1) win rate.

TRIVIA - From Column 3 name the two teams that have defeated the Fabulous Four that are not listed above?

Nice Players Finish Second

Sally and Phyllis have the best record of all rook players. They have won the most games. Their names have been etched on the trophy twice. But there's more. They've been in the championship bracket each year (5 times). In those games they have managed just a 2-5 record. The last two tournaments they have been within one victory only to watch Joyce-Marcella and Richard-Bob come from behind and sweep them each twice to claim the championship. Have they mellowed out in the last few years? Are they happy to finish second? Do they just like to blind bid just to be nice? Stay tuned as this story continues to unfold.

BY FAR THE WORST HAND EVER!!!!!!

Reprinted From The 1991 Tournament

Looking back through the Rook records we have documented that Sally Bustle said she received the worst middle in history on July 10th, 1989 at 10:53 PM. Sally warned Phyllis that their opponents Shelly & Beth would be scoring 220 points on this hand. Fortunately it didn't happen that way as the two-time champs outscored the Shelly & Beth 80 to 40. For most of us, Shelly & Beth probably would have scored a 220 but for Sally & Phyllis just another day at the office.
