1993 Rook News

A Short Message From The Tournament Director

The Rook Tournament is back and we hope this one will be the best yet. We have been planning this tournament since April and hope that the pre tournament mailing got you excited about the beach house. Good luck to all participants and thanks for your understanding and support while I was campaigning for Tax Collector last year. The most often question I am asked is how am I able to manage my time as Tournament Director and as the County Tax Collector. My reply is simple. If Deion Sanders can do it so can I.

Dick White Photo Might Bolster An Expected Smaller Tournament

With so many changes going on in our ever growing Beach House family, a repeat of the 16 team 1991 Tournament appears doubtful. An extended Beach house, selling of homes, and changing jobs are definite factors which may hinder the Tournament's size. However, a recent postcard with a cover photo featuring Dick White showing off his new physique may in fact bolster attendance. Dick who is not known for his Rook playing ability may have to fight off the lady's wanting to sit across the table to be his partner for two games just to wanting to admire him.

We've Had Enough Of This

Joyce and Marcella have only lost to one team in their last 3 tournaments and that was to Sally & Phyllis all in championship play. Well after five consecutive defeats Joyce and Marcella then retuned the favor by beating Sally & Phyllis twice in a row to capture their 1st championship. It was such a slick move that there is heavy speculation on whether Sally & Phyllis will be able to bounce back. Talk about putting someone in their place! Wow!

Hay Me-Me-Kay Would You Be My Partner!

Congratulations to Kay Henson with 25 years of faithful service in educating the children of Manatee County including your favorite tournament Director and friendly neighborhood Tax Collector. Rumor has it that she may make her tournament debut now that she has more time to dedicate to the game. You may recall that a few years back that Steve McCook tried to strike a deal for Kay to be his partner but nothing ever materialized.

We Told You So... Kind Of

From The 1991 Player Profile : "We all know Steve McCook is a well respected Rook player who taught his generation how to play. Can he do the same with Marilyn? If he can they will be championship caliber." Not a bad write up except we seeded them #13 out of 16 and gave them 15-1 odds to win. Well they lived up to their press releases and finished 3rd battling there way through the losers bracket finishing with a 5-2 record. During those seven games Steve did all the bidding. If we see Marilyn bidding, we'll know something has been going on in the off season.

Your Still An Also-Ran

Kathy & Cindy have never materialized as a respectable Rook team in tournament play. In fact they have been subject to a tremendous amount of bad press because of admitted cheating in their younger days. In 91 they were on a mission to prove everyone wrong and kind of sorta did and didn't. Seeded 10th Kathy and Cindy defeated #7 John & Karen only then to get knocked off by #2 Joyce & Marcella. Once in the losers bracket they defeated #14 Meiling & Dick only to lose for good to #13 Steve & Marilyn. With a new person in Kathy's life (husband Bill Robey) we may see this team disband. Bill made a big impression last year in the 1st annual Pool Tournament proving to everyone he can take the heat under pressure. With a 3-6 record (worse than Kenny & Drew and Kenny & Kent) Cindy may just drop Kathy and opt to team up with Bill.

The Rich Only Get Richer

In the real world there is such thing as a class system. In four Rook Tournaments we are seeing a class system develop : 4 teams that have dominated Tournament play. We call them The Upper Class and the numbers tell their story. See below:

(1)
(2)
(3)
The Upper Class
Overall Record
Against Each Other
Against Everyone Else
Shelly-Beth
14-8
2-7
12-1
Joyce-Marcella
14-7
6-7
8-0
Sally-Phyllis
15-4
6-4
9-0
Richard-Bob
8-4
5-3
3-1
TOTALS
51-23
68.9%

19-21
47.5%

32-2
94.1%

Category (1) shows that The Upper Class win nearly seven of every ten games they participate in. Category (2) shows that nearly all the games The Upper Class loses is between themselves (19 of 23). And Category (3) shows that when The Upper Class teams plays another team outside the Class they rarely lose.

Everyone else has managed just a 38-66 overall record which is a 36.5% winning percentage.

The Upper Class has won 57% of all the games ever played. Shelly & Beth could be considered upper middle class since they have taken the biggest beating in The Upper Class matches (2-7)

Now that this information is public and we have been ranting & raving about how good these teams are let see if these guys can live up to their billing.
