wheat fields
a red-tailed hawk soars
in a pale sky


a dusty moon
combines working the fields
late into the night


birdsongs
fading into the dusk
prairie shadows


redwing blackbirds
a patch of brown cattails
marking boundaries


a bird alights
and then flies on
Indian summer


wind whistling
in a fieldstone fence
empty homestead

full of heat lightning
