The language communities at UGA (Spanish and French) were established in the fall of 2000 in an effort to provide more language exposure to interested students by blending the classroom experience with that of living in a college dorm. The mix of these normally contrasting atmospheres results in a simulated immersion environment where the residents are constantly encouraged to communicate in the target language. The program, currently in its second year, has proven to be a huge success! About us Dr. Diana Ranson is one of the founders of the language communities. Her efforts, along with those of Dr. Cathy Jones(supervisor for French), are highly commendable and continue to be an integral part of the program's ongoing success. Monica Ruiz-Melendez, a doctoral student in Spanish, has recently assumed the post of language coordinator. She received her bachelor's degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Puerto Ricoin Rio Piedras. Upon completion of her degree in her native island she embarked on an education career working as a Spanish Teacher for the Prince George's County Board of Education in Maryland and the City of Atlanta Public Schools in Georgia. Afterwards, she studied at Georgia State University where she earned a Master's Degree in Spanish & Latin American Literature. Monica currently conducts doctoral studies in Latin Maerican Literature and Women's Studies at The University of Georgia and looks forward to specializing in the feminine narrative of the Spanish-Speaking Caribbean. ;;;;; |
