The Messiah is Born
In the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth. He appeared to a virgin, named Mary, who was espoused to Joseph, of the House of David. Gabriel spoke to her saying, "Hail, you that are highly favored, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women."
When Mary saw the angel Gabriel and heard his greeting, she was afraid and wondered why he greeted her in this manner.
Gabriel spoke again to her saying, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. You shall conceive and give birth to a son, who you shall name Jesus. This child shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest. The Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David. He shall reign over the House of Jacob forever, and his kingdom shall never end."
Mary asked, "But how shall this occur, as I am a virgin?"
Gabriel answered, "The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you; therefore, the holy child which you shall conceive shall be called the Son of God."
Now when Joseph found out that Mary was with child, he was troubled. He was a just man and did not wish to disgrace her publicly, therefore, he thought to send her away in secret. However, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel told Joseph that the child Mary carried was conceived of the Holy Spirit. This child, who would be named Jesus, was destined to save the people from their sins.
"Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."
When Joseph awoke from the dream, he went to Mary and took her as his wife. However, he did not consummate the marriage until after the child was born.
Caesar Augustus decreed that everyone be taxed, therefore all must return to their home city to be counted. Therefore, Joseph took Mary and left Nazareth to travel to Bethlehem, which was the home city for the House of David. While they were in Bethlehem, the child was born. He was delivered in a stable, as there was no room for them in the Inn. Mary wrapped the child in swaddling clothes, using a manger for a crib.
Shepherds were in the nearby fields watching their sheep, when an angel appeared to them. The shepherds were frightened as the glory of the Lord surrounded them, but the angel spoke and told them, "Fear not. I bring you good news of great joy for all people. For today, in the City of David, a Saviour is born, who is Christ the Lord. As a sign, you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and laying in a manger."
Suddenly a great host of angels appeared who were praising God, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men."
After the angels left, the shepherds hurried into Bethlehem to see this child. They found Mary and Joseph with the babe lying in a manger. They told Mary and Joseph of the angels and of their words. Then the shepherds returned to their flocks praising God.
On the eighth day, the babe was circumcised and given the name Jesus.
Three wise men came in search of the "King of the Jews", because they had seen "his" star in the East and had followed it to Jerusalem. Herod was upset by this and sent for the chief priests. When questioned on where the Christ would be born according to the prophecies, the priests read the prophecy, "And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah, for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel."
Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem in search of this child, telling them to return to him and report the whereabouts of the child so Herod could "worship him also."
The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem where it came to rest over the house where the young child was. After they entered the house and saw the child with his mother Mary, they fell to their knees and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
However, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, so they left Bethlehem for their own country travelling a different way. Mary and Joseph kept all these things to themselves and pondered them in their hearts.
