| This album contains videos taken of a pair of nesting cutia from two
consecutive weekends in June, ie. 22-23rd June and 29-30th June. These
were recorded with both the TRV20 and the TRV900 camcorders. Unfortunately,
there were not much videos of the female or the chick during the second
visit.
Earlier this year, the Selangor branch bird group held an introduction
to birding course in Fraser Hill. Participants then were fortunate to watch
a pair of cutia at the Telecom loop. These came very close to the road
to give the participants a good view. Mr Oon who was there to photogaph
birds also saw both birds feeding. In addition, the male was found to strip
off nesting material from the elephant fan palm but the nesting tree was
not found then.
During the Fraser Hill Bird race in June, a group of Thai birders
including Mr Pinit found the cutia nest at the same location. They apparently
saw two males and one female taking turns to feed the chick inside. Subsequently,
Cheaw & Poon, Dr Neoh Chin Boon's family and I went looking for the
nest on 22nd June. I reached the Telecom loop much later then others and
by the time I arrived, Poon had already found the cutia nest. The parents
were observed to feed one chick but we could not confirm the presence of
two males. The chick was small and had hardly open its eyes. Another dead
chick was found on the road directly below the road, presumably having
fallen out or being pushed out of the nest.
During the following weekend (29-30th June), we went back again to continue
digiscoping and videography. On 29th, the single remaining chick was already
much bigger and assuming a plumage much like an adult. According to those
who reached there much earlier than me, feeding was infrequent. In the
evening, the chick was found to climb out of the nest and explored its
surrounding by squeezing itself between leaves and branches near
the nest. We did not observe it re-enter the nest as poor weather and threatening
rain forced us to retire early for dinner.
The following morning, the chick was not to be found in the nest. The
pair of adults were found feeding in a nearby tree. They also engaged in
a short session of mutual preening as if to celebrate the successful raising
of their chick. Later around noon, more birders arrived and they saw both
adults as well as the just fledged juvenile around the nesting area. At
one stage, they came down very low and near the road, so low that I could
not get proper video without vignetting.
