As I look back to my childhood days at Andrade Camp (1929--1945), I have nothing but fond memories of my classmates and friends and all the activities that we took part in. There were so many activities that we participated in as we were growing up. There were the intercamp baseball and basketball competion between Mauka Loa camp, Mill camp and some others that I don't remember anymore. We played at the ball field and gym in Mill camp. The competition was great and all of us played our hearts out.
The favorite places that we all enjoyed was the rivers (streams) with all the swimming holes. We called these holes "boy pond", "girl pond", "green pond" and others. Most of us learned how to swim in these ponds and we had the greatest of time. These ponds are probably all covered up with trees and grass now. These ponds were huge to our young eyes.
The rivers provided us with guavas, mangoes, rose apples, mountain apples, poka or poha, hozuki, bananas, papayas and other fruits. It also provided opie (shrimp), gori (fish), frogs, and crawdads. The rivers also provided us with education, exploration and experiences that's hard to match. There were many other activities that we engaged in but to tell it all would take forever.
