Back to the dutch language

On 21 July 1940 the LTSR is declared.
On this occasion stamps of Lithuania are overprinted with "LTSR 21 VII 1940" (Lietuvos Tarybu Socialistine Respublika (Lithuanian Socialistic Sovjet-Republic).
The overprinted stamp of 10 c . is withdrawn very quickly, because it had a religious theme.
3 August 1940 the LTSR becomes the 13th sovjet-Republic within the Sovjet-Union.
After 15 March only stamps of the Sovjet-Union are permitted to use.
On this letter from Kaunas to Memel we see a mixid prepayment of Lithuanian and Sovjet stamps.

The backside of the letter: Memel is ceded by Lithuania to Germany in 1939. So the letter has been opened by the German censorship.

On 26 June 1941 Vilnius is occupied by German troops. The Lithuanian Post works yet, but the connections are bad.
Therefore stamps were overprinted locally

Using this overprint-stamps is forbidden on 31 August 1941. Then only the stamps of "Ostland" may be used. This occupation-stamps were used in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and White-Russia. Also the regular German stamps were permitted. Apart from the "Deutsche Post Ostland" also the "Deutsche Dienstpost Ostland" functioned in this area.

After the war Lithuania were a part of the Sovjet-Union again and much later it should become independent again.
