Western Freeway is part of the direct route from Melbourne to Adelaide, continuing on as Western Highway (A8) through Victoria, and then onto Dukes Highway (A8) in South Australia. The four lane freeway is over 100 km in length, and for most of the way it is in excellent condition. There are sections that revert to divided highway, as well as the so called freeway closer to Melbourne that consists of level intersections. These are gradually being replaced by interchanges. The section of highway at Anthony's Cutting is quite dangerous with sharp and steep bends through the middle of a hill, with a 90 kmh speed limit. There is also a cross road in the middle. Another problem with the M8 is that is goes straight into Melbourne's western suburbs before ending at Western Ring Road at Ardeer. Traffic can be banked up for hours at nearby Station Road, a problem that will be eliminated once the still proposed Western Freeway-Western Ring Road Link is contructed.
