Tullamarine Freeway is a 23 km route connecting the West Gate Freeway at Port Melbourne to Melbourne Airport, and also links to Calder Freeway and Western Ring Road. Eight kilometres of the freeway is part of CityLink toll road network. The freeway was built in the 1970's to take over from Mount Alexander Road and Keilor Road as part of Calder Highway, and to link the city with the then under contruction Melbourne (or Tullamarine) Airport. The section around Essendon Airport started off as just an arterial road named Lancefield Road, and was eventually converted to freeway standard. Up until Calder Freeway, this road is of excellent standard. Most of this section is eight lane, with some sections being six lane. The right lanes in each direction are express lanes. After Calder Freeway it is four to six lanes, but still of high quality. Freeway status terminates just north of Melbourne Airport exit, and the road continues into Sunbury Road (C743).
