The M1 is a part of the nation-wide route Highway 1, although now that Victoria has the alpha-numeric system, Highway 1 is either A1 or M1. The M1 standard of road is around 215 km in length. It begins at Geelong as Princes Highway, into Princes Freeway just outside of Geelong for nearly 50 km, into West Gate Freeway about 15 km from Melbourne CBD, joining CityLink, passing through Domain and Burnley Tunnels (one each direction), into Monash Freeway for about 40 km, back into Princes Freeway (east) as it bypasses Berwick, then back into Princes Highway. This section through Pakenham will eventually be bypassed. The freeway starts again at Nar Nar Goon, unfortunately with at grade intersections, but soon enough it turns into a real freeway as it heads to the La Trobe Valley, finishing just before Traralgon. Future extensions will be the Traralgon Bypass, Pakenham Bypass and Geelong Bypass.
