Welcome to Freeway Vic, a site
on the road system of Australia's smallest mainland state, Victoria.
Here you can view information and images on the freeways, highways,
main streets as well as road signs within Victoria.
Although it is the smallest mainland state, Victoria is the most densely populated,
and the second largest in population, nearly 4.8 million. Melbourne, it's capital
makes up much of the population, being over 3.5 million. It has a world class
freeway network, which will be close to fully connected in the not too distant
future.
During the 1960's, plans were drawn up on Melbourne's proposed freeways, which
if were contructed, would resemble an LA style freeway network, meaning native
areas would have been destroyed and suburbs split in half. Fortunately, only
the necessary freeways have been built. Some parklands and homes have been
destroyed, where there were no other options, but most freeways follow transmissions
lines, industrial areas, or have long had land preserved for them. Our public
transport system, although not perfect is still very extensive, and is improving
to meet the needs of a growing city.
There are numerous road enthusiasts covering the world. There are many sites
covering the famous system of state highways and freeways covering the US,
and there are lesser sites covering other countries. Currently, there are a
small amount of sites covering Australia's road network, but it is growing,
and the current sites are very informative and interesting. It is great to
see so many who share the same interest, which may seem odd to some, but hey,
each to their own.
So sit back and relax, and check out our system of roads down-under.
Cheers
Josh
