Victoria's highways have had name changes, extensions and additions over the years. The metropolitan area of Melbourne has had numerous additions, that will probably never be used by the general public. Warrigul Highway from Mentone to Burwood will probably always be known as Warrigul Road, it's original name. The short Yarra Bank Highway in Southbank will probably always be known as City Road and Alexandra Avenue. Docklands Highway from West Melbourne to Footscray will probably always be known as Footscray Road, Moreland Street, Whitehall Street and Francis Street. It is really the major changes that people seem to become used to, like when South Eastern Freeway became Monash Freeway, although I have heard it being called The South Eastern on traffic reports. The majority of Victoria's rural highways are given a 'B' status, as they are "sealed roads, wide enough for two traffic lines, with good centre line and edge line marking, shoulders, and a high standard of guidepost delineation. 'B' roads provide the primary link for major regions not served by 'A' roads and for highly significant tourism regions." (Vicroads). There are some however, that have been given a 'C' status. Borung Highway in Victoria's north-west is split into two 'C' routes. Wimmera Highway from Horsham to the South Australian border is a 'C' route. Hyland and Omeo Highways in Victoria's east are also 'C' roads. These "are generally two lane sealed roads with shoulders. 'C' roads provide important links between population centres and between these centres and the primary transport network." (Vicroads) For more information and images, click on the links below:
