Ballarat

Ballarat is Victoria's largest inland city, with a population of over 80,000. Located 110 km west of Melbourne just off Western Freeway, the city was built from the fortunes of the gold mining days. There are many grand historic buildings along tree lines streets. The west side of the city is planned with wide streets forming a grid pattern, while the east side is hilly with many narrow windy streets. Sovereign Hill is a mock gold mining town that tries to capture the gold mining days of the cities beginnings. It is Ballarat's most famous attraction. The city is also home to Mars Confectionary. Another attraction is Lake Wendouree, once a swamp, now a placid lake that was used in the 1956 Olympics as the rowing course.
