Bendigo
Bendigo is one of Victoria's largest cities, having a population of over 92,000. It is located at the junction of Midland, Calder, McIvor and Loddon Valley Highways, 150km north-west of Melbourne. It has one of the finest collections of Victorian buildings in Australia. In 1851 gold was discovered, which started one of the biggest goldrushes in Australia. The result of this is Bendigo, a grand city with grand buildings. Miners would live in their ethnic communities. By 1870 Bendigo (or Sandhurst at the time) was the most important goldmining site in the world. Today the city lives on tourism and industry. It also serves the surrounding agricultural district.
