Arcade Game Designer v1.1

As if SEUD were not enough, here's something else for you to have a play with. AGD allows absolutely anyone to create simple stand-alone arcade games for the Spectrum. Although it isn't as easy to use as PGD or SEUD, it should be capable of producing a variety of different game styles with a little patience and imagination.

Latest release is version 1.1. Instructions are included in the zip file.

Damage

Formerly known as Shooty Thing, Damage is a demonstration game written with my new Shoot-Em-Up Designer tool, SEUD. I've tagged on an intro using Intro Maker V1.2, and this is the result - 3 levels of hardcore blasting. There is room for further expansion with more levels or extensions to the 3 already done, but I'll leave that to others.

SEUD is now complete and will be available from Cronosoft in due course.

Anyway, have fun.

Intro Maker 1.3

Now updated to incorporate a custom font if required. Designed for games produced using PGD and SEUD, this will also work with software created with a number of other utilities. Simply load in your game, type in the text you want to appear on the title page, answer a few questions, and then the program creates an intro for you. You can even add effects such as a starfield or scrolling message. No need to worry about BASIC loaders or what start address to use, it's all done for you automatically.

A few too many on the rocks is what caused this predicament.

Egghead wondered how many toasters a fish and a banana could buy.

Shelley is Coming to tea at three o'clock and the oval fellow is determined to cook something nice. Not having the culinary expertise to fry an egg, he has a sentient oven to suggest a suitable recipe for the occasion - trouble is, he has to source all the ingredients himself. Turbomania 16K (released 31.10.2005)

Cadwell Park had undergone a number of radical design changes in recent years.

Six times Formula Retro racing champion Tim Wrangle receives an unpleasant surprise during a practice lap when he hits a hole in the fabric of space and time and is transported to a parallel universe. In this universe motor sport takes a different form. Trapped inside what appears to be a simple video game, Tim must cover every inch of the track while pursued by two opponents intent on his demise. Our hero will need his wits about him just to survive, never mind find a way back to his own dimension.

Area 51 (released 04.05.2005)

Fizzog was surprised to find Area 51 in Miner Willy's shed.

After a heavy night drinking with his friends Fizzog decides to go for a quick spin around the galaxy on his CosmoScooter. Alas, the extra-terrestrial numpty crashes his precious vehicle on a primitive planet called Earth completely wrecking it in the process, his only hope of sourcing the components required to fix it being to search the place known only as Area 51. To add to his worries a meddlesome Earthling cult calling itself "The US Army" has been conducting genetic experiments upon previous alien visitors and the hideous consequences of these Frankenstein-like dabblings patrol the very hangars and sheds Fizzog needs to search. Yikes!

The original Area 51 was written in 4K of memory, and did quite well in the 2004 minigame competition, taking fourth place. This is the full and final version, considerably expanded for the 16K Spectrum.

Lunaris (released 19.11.2004)

Pulled off-course by unexpected gravitational forces, space adventurer Henri Latrine has drifted into a little-known region of the galaxy only to encounter a previously undiscovered planet which was once the home of a great alien civilisation. This alien race is long gone, destroyed by a mystery event which occurred even before the dinosaurs walked the Earth, but the moons surrounding the planet are peppered with the tombs of their elders. These underground burial chambers are full of bounty, but still guarded by the automatic defence mechanisms left in place to deter tomb raiders aeons ago. Rich pickings are there for the taking, if Henri can navigate his way around the catacombs...

Originally written in just five hours at the ORSAM show 2004, an extended version is available from Retro-Soft. I'd like to do another "game in a day", or even a "game over a weekend" sometime, but there's no Orsam show this year so it'll have to wait, unless I'm invited to another event.

Anno Domini (released 18.07.2004)

In the year 4000BC a tribe of hunter-gatherers decide to settle down and start farming the land. It is the very dawn of civilisation, and you have been chosen as their leader. Can you build the greatest civilisation the world has ever seen, or will your people end up as a small footnote in history?

Originally written in just 4K for the minigame competition 2004.

Fighting it out over a small patch of land.

Version 1.01 is the latest version and boasts numerous improvements.

Fun Park (released 19.03.2004)

Alzheimers World was the messiest park in the country as nobody could remember where the toilets were

Fun Park is a major expansion of Amusement Park 4000, and the first commercially-released game for the 16K model for 20 years. I'm probably more proud of this one than anything else I've written. Now available from the Cronosoft website.

Amusement Park 4000 (released 26.07.2003)

Anyone familiar with games like Rollercoaster Tycoon or Theme Park will recognise this. Build and run your own amusement park, decide how much to spend on advertising and put money into R&D to develop new rides. Can you build a park to stand the test of time, or will you go bankrupt?

This game took the silver joystick in the 2003 minigames competition. For those who don't already know, the aim was to write a game either in 1K or 4K of memory. It was a tight squeeze getting this into 4K but I was happy with the result. It should work on all Spectrums - yes, even the rare 16K model, providing you don't have a Microdrive attached.

That summer everyone stayed at home to play ZX81 games

Egghead III - Egghead in Space (released 07.12.2002)

For those who wish to experience the real thing, a specially extended version is now available on cassette for the ZX Spectrum. For more information go to the Cronosoft website

Answering the telephone isn't going to be easy

Our hero returns in his third outing for the Spectrum.

The plot: Remember how those aliens paid Egghead a visit a few years ago leaving his house in such a mess he had to go around clearing up after them? Obviously that wasn't "un oeuf", because they're back again and this time they've abducted Egghead's favourite Spectrum games.Quick witted as ever, our "dairydevil" hero managed to "scramble" aboard one of the alien rocket ships before it took off for planet Zog and hitched a ride back with the extra-terrestrials to retrieve his precious software collection. Upon arriving, Egghead managed to teleport into the underground labyrinth and that was when his problems really began...

You can now download the complete version of the game as a .TAP file, complete with an excellent loading screen courtesy of Tommy Pereira. Feel free to mail me with any constructive comments - you never know, I might yet be persuaded to write Egghead IV...

Right-click here to download file and rename to Egghead3.tap

The file is in Spectrum tape format, so should be compatible with most Spectrum emulators.

ZX32 is recommended, but other emulators should be okay to use too.
