In the name of God Amen. I, James AIKMAN, of the county of Daviess and state of Indiana , being weak in body, and cosidering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being of a sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed be the Almighty God for the same, do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say:

First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Deborah one third of all my personal property, to be divided between her and my children hereinafter mentioned, after my decease, but in case they cannot agree on a division of said property, then the same shall be sold and the proceeds divided as aforesaid. I also give to my wife the whole of my cupboard ware (which I did not intend to be included in the personal property aforesaid).

Secondly, I also give and bequeath unto my beloved children, Polly HOPKINS, John AIKMAN, Elizabeth CARNAHAN, Jane STRINGER, Mariah TRAYLER, and Eleanor VEALE, two thirds of all my personal property (except the cupboard ware aforesaid) to be equally divided amongst them, but in case they cannot agrree in a division of the same, then the same shall be sold and the proceeds divided as aforesaid. I also give and bequeath unto my children above named, to be equally divided as aforesaid, the amount of money I have now out on interest, amounting, probably to three hundred dollars - out of which, however, my funeral expenses and other expenses are to be first paid.

Thirdly, I also give and bequeath unto my children above named., the south half of lots number ninety-two and ninety-three in Washington, being the lots whereon I now live together with the appurtenances thereunto belonging, subject however to my wife's dower during her widowhood or during her lifetime should she remain my widow. The two thirds of said lots above bequeathed to my children aforesaid, are to be divided equally amongst them or sold as they may agree upon.. I consider that my son Samuel AIKMAN, who is not mentioned above, has already had his full portion of my estate and therefore not willed him anything.

And lastly, I do hereby appoint my son John AIKMAN and son-in-law James C. VEALE executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

It seems that John Aikman had a fort whose members were not named below. It was located at SW1/4 S10 R7 T2). "The following is a list of the heads of families that assembled in each of the first five forts named: Hawkin's Fort (SE1/4 S32 R7 T3) - Cornelius Bogard, Eli Hawkins and a Mr. Curry, the young men being Charner, Eli, Joseph and William Hawkins. Comer's Fort (SE1/4 S4 R7 T2) - Friend Spears, James and Thomas Aikman, Ebeneezer Jones, Alexander Stevens, Chris Gregory, John Stringer, William White, John Wallace, the widow Wallace and two sons, the widow Ellis, Vance Jones, Ephraim Thompson, E. Ragsdale, Thrice Stafford and Alexander Stephenson. There was a large number of young men in this fort, among them: Wiley R. Daviess County, Barr Twp., page 818 EZEKIEL HOPKINS was born in Daviess County, Ind., in 1823. He received very poor educational advantages, owing to the undeveloped condition of the schools at that time. At the age of seventeen he took charge of his father's farm of 240 acres, and cared for his parents until their death. He then inherited the old homestead, about 180 acres of which are under cultivation.

In 1853 he was married to Martha Hollingsworth, born in Daviess County in 1834, daughter of Samuel and Louisa (Lett) Hollingsworth. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins became the parents of ten children: Louisa, Mary O., Samuel L., George E., Joseph H., Edna J., Eli F., Albert, Zelek and Laura (deceased). Both husband and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hopkins is a stanch Republican and cast his first vote for Taylor. He has been a successful farmer, and is much respected as a neighbor and citizen. His parents were Esek and Mary (Aikman) Hopkins, born in Maryland and Pennsylvania in 1777 and 1779, respectively. They were married in Kentucky, in 1802, and in 1818 came to Daviess County, Ind., locating on the farm where Ezekiel now lives. The father died in 1859 and the mother in 1856.

THE AIKMAN FAMILY. The history of Daviess County, Ind., would be incomplete without a detailed sketch of the above named family; not because they have been holders or aspirants of office, or have urged themselves upon the notice of the citizens of their county, but because from their earliest settlement in this county, in the person of John Aikman, they have been promoters of the advancement and well-being of the community in which they have resided, largely by their liberality, industry, and public enterprise, which, as a whole, are the predominant characteristics of the family. They have represented the county from its very earliest settlement, and have been identified with her in all the progress she has made, and as early pioneers and citizens of a late date, have endured their full share of hardships, and assisted in leveling the sturdy oak, and clearing and developing farms. JAMES AIKMAN and his descendents constitute one branch of the family. James is the eldest of twelve children--five brothers and two sisters now living--born to the marriage of John Aikman and Mary BARR. He was born in Bourbon County, Ky., January 7, 1810. Both parents were natives of the "Bluegrass State," and when James was but a small boy, came to Daviess County, Ind., and located on a tract of land, which the father entered, two miles south of Washington. Five years later the family removed to the "sugar land" neighborhood in this township, where they resided until a few years previous to the father's death (which occurred in 1850), when they moved to Washington. John Aikman was a quiet, unassuming man, and accumulated considerable means by his frugal and industrious habits. James secured a limited education, attending the old log schoolhouse of early times. When twenty-two years old he married Sarah BANTA, a native of Nicholas County, Ky., born January 1, 1814, and began farming for himself. For fifty years he was a tiller of the soil, and succeeded in accumulating 400 acres of land, one-half of which is under cultivation, and managed by his sons, who reside upon it. In 1874 he and his wife removed to Washington, and have since lived a retired and happy life, surrounded by the comforts their industry has secured. They became the parents of eight children, these five now living: Samuel, Henry, John, Sarah D., and Martha Anne. Mr. Aikman has been a Republican since the organization of the party, and previous to that time was a Whig. He and his wife have been members of the Presbyterian Church for over forty years. He has resided in Daviess County longer than any other living person, so far as is now known. Samuel T. Aikman was born November 2, 1839. He secured a common school education, and married at the age of thirty-nine, locating on part of his father's farm. He was married to Martha CUNNINGHAM in 1878. They have two children: Claud and Maud. HENRY AIKMAN was born January 30, 1842, and securd the same education and rearing as his brother. February 19, 1867, he was united in marriage to Laura E. BRADFORD, who lived to be the mother of three children, only Clara B. living, and died July 30, 1870. In September, 1873, he was married to Sarah L. WILLIAMS, who bore him six children, these five living: Willie M., Mamie, Gertie, Henry C. and Paul. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. John Aikman was born February 27, 1845, and was reared upon the same farm that Sameul and Henry were. He was married, in 1870, to Permelia ALLEN, who bore him six children: James, John A., Edward T., Grace, Charles, and Sicily. He served in the late war, enlisting in the Forty-second Indiana Volunteers in 1862, and remained in the service two years. The sons are all industrious and prominent farmers, and belong to the Republican party. Sarah L., the elder of the two daughters, was born August 23, 1847, and is now the wife of Simeon COLEMAN, a young farmer living at Topeka, Kas. They were married in 1873, and have two children: James W. and Jessie A. Martha Anne, the younger daughter, was born July 25, 1849, and yet resides with her parents. The transcription of the John Aikman Bible seems to be in error. The eleventh child of John and Mary (Barr) Aikman should be William Martin Aikman, not William Barton Aikman. William Barton Aikman is the son of Barton Stone Aikman and was born about 1834. William Barton Aikman married Elnora Richardson in 1855 in Vermillion County, Indiana.

Eleanor Aikman related to her family in later years that she remembered her place of birth and early girlhood in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. She remembered it as Shepherdstown, Virginia. This town is presently in West Virginia, in Jefferson County. At the time of the births of Sarah and Eleanor Aikman it was in Virginia, in Berkeley County. It is very near the present-day Martinsburg, West Virginia.

He is a son of Levi and Sallie (Veale) Peek, the latter of whom was a daughter of James C. and Eleanor (Aikman) Veale. James C. Veale Sr. emigrated from South Carolina to the territory of Indiana, in the spring of 1806, and settled on a creek which was afterward known as Veale's Creek, and is so known to this day... James C. Veale Jr was born in 1786, in South Carolina, and died in the spring of 1858... At Comer's Fort, which was located near old Maysville, he was married to Eleanor Aikman, who was born in 1791, in Shepherdstown, in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia, and lived there during her early girlhood. This obituary from an unknown paper is pasted in the family Bible of Washington TRAYLOR/Mariah Aikman, now owned by a descendant residing in SC. Mariah died in Arlington , Tarrant Co. TX and was the first buried in Ford Cemetery on what was originally Traylor property. Mariah TRAYLOR departed this life June 7th 1858. She was born in Bourbon County KY, March 11th 1799, daughter of James and Elizabeth AIKMAN; married in Indiana in 1818, Professed Religion 1822, united with the Presbyterian Church. Removed to Arkansas, 1839 where she connected with the Methodist Church in consequence of not being convenient to the Presbyterians. Soon after she informed her friends by letter that she found religion just as good in the Methodist as in the Presbyterian Church. Removed to Texas in the fall of

1854; brought letter and again united with the Methodist Church. Since she first made a profession of religion, she has never been known to express a doubt of her acceptance with God. She has been a useful member of the church and society, a mother in Israel, strong in faith, fervent in spirit, instant

in prayer, serving the Lord and doing good to her fellow beings. She died as she lived, full of faith and of the Holy Ghost. Calm and in her right mind, she bid adieu to her family and friends, gave them a parting kiss and her Seraph winged spirit ascended on high where love immortal is known. During a

protracted illness of seven weeks she manifested an entire calmness and perfect resignation which astonished friends and puzzled skeptics. She left eight children, all members of the church, and a bereft husband, who still survives to fill for a time his station in life. He is a steward and a class leader in our church, and a superintendant of a sabbath school. We deeply sympathize with the bereaved who mourn her loss; yet we know that our loss is her eternal gain, for she rests from her labor and her works do follows her. W. S. SOUTH

Washington TRAYLOR Blessed are they who die in the Lord. Tis a truth full of comfort to all surviving friends. The death of Bro. Washington TRAYLOR, who was born in Spartanburg District South Carolina July the 3rd 1794 and was born again of the spirit in Indiana in 1825. And who died at his residence Nov. 27th 1864; in Tarrant Co. Texas, calmly, quietly and peacefully on Sabbath. That day of all

others he was delighted to meet his brethren and neighbors in class or prayer meeting, when there was no preaching at the Church. Bro. TRAYLOR was what might emphatically be called an every day Christian; his piety was deep and abiding. His house was a home for the preachers and a welcome and pleasant one as many preachers can testify. Oh! how he is missed in the community where he lived.

Bro. TRAYLOR greatly desired to live to see his youngest child married and settled in life. The Lord granted him his desire, truly he came to his grave in a full age like a shook of corn cometh to its season. Bro. TRAYLOR sleeps in death: and when the great harvester of the world shal come and shall shout harvest home, we feel that our departed brother will be garnered in Heaven. May the Lord bless his

children, and grand children who still live and may they meet their departed sire in a world that's free from sin. James M. JONES

Daviess County, Barr Twp., page 818 EZEKIEL HOPKINS was born in Daviess County, Ind., in 1823. He received very poor educational advantages, owing to the undeveloped condition of the schools at that time. At the age of seventeen he took charge of his father's farm of 240 acres, and cared for his parents until their death. He then inherited the old homestead, about 180 acres of which are under cultivation.

In 1853 he was married to Martha Hollingsworth, born in Daviess County in 1834, daughter of Samuel and Louisa (Lett) Hollingsworth. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins became the parents of ten children: Louisa, Mary O., Samuel L., George E., Joseph H., Edna J., Eli F., Albert, Zelek and Laura (deceased). Both husband and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hopkins is a stanch Republican and cast his first vote for Taylor. He has been a successful farmer, and is much respected as a neighbor and citizen. His parents were Esek and Mary (Aikman) Hopkins, born in Maryland and Pennsylvania in 1777 and 1779, respectively. They were married in Kentucky, in 1802, and in 1818 came to Daviess County, Ind., locating on the farm where Ezekiel now lives. The father died in 1859 and the mother in 1856.

William Barton Aikman is the son of Barton Stone Aikman and was born about 1834. William Barton Aikman married Elnora Richardson in 1855 in Vermillion County, Indiana.

THE AIKMAN FAMILY. The history of Daviess County, Ind., would be incomplete without a detailed sketch of the above named family ... James Aikman and his descendents constitute one branch of the family. James is the eldest of twelve children--five brothers and two sisters now living--born to the marriage of John Aikman and Mary BARR. He was born in Bourbon County, Ky., January 7, 1810. ... James secured a limited education, attending in the old log schoolhouse of early times. When twenty-two years old he married Sarah BANTA, a native of Nicholas County, Ky., born January 1, 1814, and began farming for himself. For fifty years he was a tiller of the soil, and succeeded in accumulating 400 acres of land, one-half of which is under cultivation, and managed by his sons, who reside upon it. In 1874 he and his wife removed to Washington, and have since lived a retired and happy life, surrounded by the comforts their industry has secured. They became the parents of eight children, these five now living: Samuel, Henry, John, Sarah D., and Martha Anne. Mr. Aikman has been a Republican since the organization of the party, and previous to that time was a Whig. He and his wife have been members of the Presbyterian Church for over forty years. He has resided in Daviess County longer than any other living person, so far as is now known. Samuel T. Aikman was born November 2, 1839. He secured a common school education, and married at the age of thirty-nine, locating on part of his father's farm. He was married to Martha CUNNINGHAM in 1878. They have two children: Claud and Maud. Henry Aikman was born January 30, 1842, and securd the same education and rearing as his brother. February 19, 1867, he was united in marriage to Laura E. BRADFORD, who lived to be the mother of three children, only Clara B. living, and died July 30, 1870. In September, 1873, he was married to Sarah L. WILLIAMS, who bore him six children, these five living: Willie M., Mamie, Gertie, Henry C. and Paul. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. John Aikman was born February 27, 1845, and was reared upon the same farm that Sameul and Henry were. He was married, in 1870, to Permelia ALLEN, who bore him six children: James, John A., Edward T., Grace, Charles, and Sicily. He served in the late war, enlisting in the Forty-second Indiana Volunteers in 1862, and remained in the service two years. The sons are all industrious and prominent farmers, and belong to the Republican party. Sarah L., the elder of the two daughters, was born August 23, 1847, and is now the wife of Simeon COLEMAN, a young farmer living at Topeka, Kas. They were married in 1873, and have two children: James W. and Jessie A. Martha Anne, the younger daughter, was born July 25, 1849, and yet resides with her parents.
