This is the story of Marshall, Mark and
Marty Stouffer the summer they took their first trip to film wildlife in
America. It is narrated from the standpoint of Marshall (the youngest brother
played by Jonathan Taylor Thomas), but Mark (played here by Devon Sawa)
was the only one of the three I noticed in the credits as being involved
in the production of the movie. In case you are not familiar with the three
brothers, all three are involved in the production of wildlife films. The
oldest (Marty Stouffer Jr., played by Scott Bairstow in this movie) produced
the nature series "Wild America". I don't know how close the movie follows
actual events in the lives of the three brothers, but it is a great movie.
In this movie it is Mark and Marty who
are the most interested in making films, and Marshall is the uncooperative
subject of many of their films. Their father is an independent business
man who rebuilds and sales automotive parts, mostly carburetors. Their
father is not pleased with the decision of his sons to pursue a career
in film making instead of learning the family business he has build up.
However after obtaining a camera capable of making high quality films the
boys manage to get away for the summer (extending into September) to film
endanger predators. What they get during this summer is not enough to sale
to a TV station as they planed but did prove, at least to them, that this
is what they want to do. It is noted at the end of this movie that almost
ten years later The Predators aired on NBC narrated by Robert Redford.
Regardless of how much of the story is true and how much is fiction, the
three young actors do a great job portraying the three Stouffers in their
adventures of that summer.
