After a quick view of "killings to come", the
movie begins about a week before Christmas and two days before Rudy (Ben
Affleck) is to be released from prison where he has served five years for
grand theft auto. His cellmate Nick (James Frain) is to be released the
same day after serving two years for killing someone. During the past six
months Nick has been talking to Rudy endlessly about his romantic correspondence
to a woman named Ashley (Charlize Theron) whom he has never met, but has
written him steadily after finding his name in a personals ad. She has
sent Nick dozens of pictures of herself and will be waiting for him when
he is released. Rudy, on the other hand, is looking forward to returning
to his family and having a fresh cup of hot chocolate and a slice of pecan
pie. But Nick is stabbed during a prison riot that day. Rudy, after seeing
Ashley waiting for Nick outside the prison, and recognizing her from her
pictures, decides to assume Nick's identity and spend a few days with her
before going home. (As far as deceit and betrayal, this is only the top
of the ice burg in this movie. But to tell of all the deceit and betrayal
afoot would spoil the movie. It is best to let some it play out as the
movie progresses.) For Rudy things start looking bad when Gabriel (Gary
Sinise) shows up and informs "Nick" that he has read the letters Nick wrote
to his little sister Ashley and if Nick wants to be with Ashley he will
first have to tell Gabriel and his associates about the Indian casino where
Nick was employed as a security guard before being sent to prison, so they
can rob the casino. If Nick does not tell Gabriel what he wants to know,
Nick will be killed. (Rudy's claim at first that he is not Nick almost
gets him killed.) Rudy does know a little about the casino from what Nick
told him while they were cellmates, but he does not know anywhere near
everything Gabriel wants to know. His only hope is to fake it, make up
what he does not know, and try to escape either before are during the robbery
because by the time the robbery is over, if anyone is still alive they
will know he did not tell them the truth.
This is an interesting suspense thriller
which is not so complicated that the audience ever feels lost, but at the
same time never fully informs the audience of exactly what is really happening
until the conclusion.

This movie has nudity in two places. Early in the movie there is a sex scene between Rudy and Ashley, both are seen nude from the rear and the Ashley's breasts are seen. Later in the movie the Ashley removes her bikini top in the swimming pool showing her breasts again much more clearly.
