Rambling Rose is based on Calder
Willingham's novel of the same name. It is set in a small, Georgia
town during the 1930's. The Hillyer family takes Rose in as a housemaid
to help her avoid being forced into a life of prostitution. Rose is a lower
class girl with a troubled past but gets along well with the Hillyer children
and works hard around the house. But, while she does not want to be a prostitute,
she is promiscuous. Her appearance and personality are such that men chase
after her, and she not only knows this, but loves the attention. Mr. Hillyer,
hardly able to resist her seductive ways himself, tries to either curb
her behavior, or get her influence away from his children. Mrs. Hillyer,
on the other hand, finds it hard to believe there is such a big problem
and fights to keep her. The thirteen year old boy of the house, however,
finds her sexy ways quite enlightening, and would love to explore the subject
with her more fully. But, while he does almost seduce her one night, she
still sees him a "just a child" and finally puts a stop to his advances.
However, not nearly as soon as she should have.
I found this movie to be quite enjoyable.
I thought that Robert Duvall and Lukas Haas put on exceptionally good performances,
not to take anything away from the other stars, for all did a great job.
