January MBUK's Mintsauce interpretation
They said it couldn't be done but here goes; 2nd to last page of MBUK.
First impressions: A lot of dark colours have been used so obviously there's a more somber attitude this month. Maybe the early nights are getting to Jo Burt. This is complemented by the scenic pictures and large thought bubbles from the ram. (I forget his name)
Further insight: Reading into the second and third boxes, the ram is being introspective of what he sees, evaluating the positives and negatives of the city below. Jo Burt uses emotive language and bold type to convey strongly the sense of awe and wonder the ram feels, emphasised by the dark empty space around him and the tiny lights down below. We then see a lot of onomatopoeia; use of words that sound like the action the word is, for example, 'kicking', 'stench' and 'beating' brought together by many 'and's. These increases the speed of the text and makes it feel that the ram is letting go of his pent-up feelings all at once. Into the fourth box, and the mood becomes more positive again, 'endless possibilities'. The problems before also become more petty and insignificant due to the vast setting of several planets in space, which the ram also speaks of. The fith box shows a possible urge for power. However this becomes relative due to the space setting. The words used so far convey a sense of trying to get a hold of something, to understand life better and find a place in the Universe, and so far, not succeeding.
In the sixth box we are brought back to Earth. The feelings so far are confirmed by negative introspective of the ram saying how the night reflects the dark inside. He is drawn to look humble and without much in the way of possesions or life. In the final paragraph, everything is turned around in a 'comic' (bad pun) reversal, showing all his friends drinking coffee on the hill, with the words; 'my friends ride through it with big bright lights,' referring to the dark inside him. This shows that the ram feels much better with his friends and has managed to put all his negative thoughts and insecurities behind him to continue on. A real positive finish, considering the negative depths of the recent boxes.
To sum up: Jo Burt is telling us that we can't hang around dwelling on problems that we face as they're part of life and are actually insignificant in the big picture. He's saying to pick yourself up, move on, enjoy yourself and get out there.
