Tracks and Trails
Here's a list of riding around Winchester.
The Hill:
This place is appropriately named because of how it was found. A couple of us riders were exploring the countryside for a new DH course, when across a field they noticed (a) a hill, (b) Forest and (c) potential. Trekking across we soon realised there were good varying levels of steepness and excellent tree cover from rain in most places.
After mapping out a basic course we started to build. Once the course was finished we had many unique features such as a gully jump, a descent to drop off, technical roots with berms and winding turns. A quite recent edition to our trails, it offers a lot but unfortunately is quite some distance away.
Farley Mount:
Lots of large hilly areas, covered with forest first attracted us here 2 years ago. Although quite far away, there is and has always been loads of potential for riding. At first, we built jumps and berms into an existing course, until we realised it lacked real excitement. This led us to build from scratch a huge descending course through the trees. It was great too, but it took a lot of work and now includes moguls, tabletops, berms, root sections, drop offs and log jumps. Other bonuses are a lack of ramblers and good digging soil.
Chilcomb Hill:
Although found relatively recently, most of our riders believe this is the best location for DH riding. However, there's a price to pay of getting there, involving riding up a steep road for half an hour. In total there are 6 courses, each with different attributes for them. My personal favourite is the main course, because of the massive berms and huge drops, enabling great speed from start to finish. Thankfully, we arrived after most of the courses had been built, meaning little time was spent flattening the track at horizontal parts, due to the sheer steepness of the hill. Recently, race tape is being currently added for definition and creating a more professional feel.
Unfortunately, police try and prevent riding here nowadays.
Golf Course:
If you can avoid being hit by an 80 mph golf ball, there's lots here to keep riders entertained. Originally we rode through the middle of the course but kept mainly to a jump spot at the bottom, where we'd made a long line of jumps, including tables and doubles. However, this changed when the council trashed the area, covering it in trees :( To fight back, we decided to build some courses through a section of trees in-between the greens. Although quite short, its exciting, technical and close to where all of us live. Otherwise, you can have fun on the bunkers!
